Aurelian

“I saw the sign,”

Aurelian stammered

“and I’d like to apply.”

The butler, called Mr. Graves, scanned him critically.

Mr. Graves

“Name and occupation?”

Aurelian

“Aurelian Mercier. I’m a welder.”

Graves studied him, unimpressed by his small frame. Aurelian lifted his chin.

Aurelian

“I’m a hard worker. I don’t know what the job is, but I’ll learn fast—”

Mr. Graves

“You’ll do,”

Graves interrupted.

Aurelian

“Do? For what exactly?”

Aurelian asked, stunned.

Mr. Graves

“That is for the new Master, Mr. Kael Moreau, to decide,”

The butler said firmly.

Mr. Graves

“But you can’t meet him looking like that.”

Aurelian glanced down at his old clothes and tried to hide his stained fingers behind his back.

The butler clapped his hands, and two maids appeared.

Mr. Graves

“Take him upstairs, make sure he bathes, find him proper clothes, and bring him to the dining room by six for supper with Mr. Moreau.”

Ella (maid)

“Yes, Mr. Graves,”

The maids said, gently leading Aurelian toward the staircase. He looked back nervously.

Aurelian

“Wait—does this mean I got the job?”
