They said the Bellarose mansion was haunted by those who died in the fire.

Late at night, the ghost of a little boy was said to appear in the East wing window, watching passersby.

They called the house cursed.

They said it should be destroyed.

But something about it drew Aurelian.

Every day, he took a detour on his way to work, stopping at the iron gate to glimpse the crumbling mansion.

Its boarded windows, sagging roof, and vine-covered columns told a story of decay, but to Aurelian, she (the house) was beautiful.

He would imagine her in her prime—manicured gardens, burbling fountains, and grand doors swinging open to reveal a dazzling atrium.

He could almost hear the creak of polished floors under his boots and smell the jasmine from the garden.

Lost in his daydreams, Aurelian’s rough fingers tightened around the gate.

The cold didn’t bother him until a sharp wind jolted him back to reality.

The mansion was as it had always been: abandoned, forgotten, and shadowed by a "No Trespassing" sign.

A glance at his watch made his heart race.

Grabbing his lunch pail, Aurelian sprinted off, his makeshift hems unraveling as he barely made it in time to punch his card.
