I opened the gate from outside and walk into the familiar compound I grew up in
The building is painted in white and has artificial plants around it. Some fruit trees surround the compound.
I spot Baba Shola, he is dressed in a native attire with black cap. He is seated on a bench in his corridor
"Ahh my daughter, you come"
"yes ohh, baba Shola ekaaro"
"Bawo ni"
"fine sir, how is the family"
"we thank God"
This man has been keeping this house since I know my left and right leg's. But he doesn't look like he has aged a bit
I walk into the living room, the furniture are still arranged the same. Except the big family portrait in the floor, I stare at it longer, recalling when the portrait was drawn.
It was 5 years ago, when I finished my youth service. Mum made it a tradition to make a portrait every year.
"Folakemi is that you"
I turn over to mum, she has add some weight, wasn't it last month I saw her last.
"what are you looking at, come over here"
I walk over and she engulfs me in a hug
"Ekaaro ma"
"how are you"
"fine mum, you said it was something urgent"
"Hmm, urgent yet you were staring at the portraits like you haven't seen them before"
"it's been long I last saw this one from 2010. You know you kept it in Baba's room. How is everything "
Mum raised her head up and sniff the air, immediately I said that
"oh carry that your fake care to that side, come home you won't come. Oya Call self, it's a problem"
"Ahh mumcy, it's just work"
"Shey you are also working on Saturday and Sunday"
"Mum, what did you cook am hungry"
"Nothing oh, we are ordering"
"No matter how social media wants to influence you, you will never prefer breakfast outside home"
Mum starts laughing at my statement and wave me off
"Go and greet your father Ojare, he is in the other living room"
I nod okay and walk to the second living room.
I moved out of this house 3 years ago and now I live with Courtney. The talk of marriage with my parents got out of hand so I decided to move out
My father is still angry at me for that but too bad, I don't care and I will always have my way
First they wanted me to study law, I did that and gave them the certificate. Now am a caterer and part time make up artist
I entered the living room and saw my dad chatting with someone
"What are you doing here?!"
I said and they both looked at me
"Kemi, we have been waiting for you"
My dad said and Ifeoma stood up and walked to me. She tried to carry my bag
"Leave me alone, in fact leave my house!"
Am usually not like this, this thing is just making me lose my temper
"Is that how to greet an old friend"
Said dad
