Sharlynn sat in the back of the room, her eyes roaming across the sea of faces surrounding her. She was a bit surprised that it was so quiet and wondered why that was. As she continued to look around she noticed that all eyes seemed to be focused on the front of the room. Had she missed something? Sharlynn's eyes traveled in the direction everyone else was looking.
What she saw there completely shocked her.
Standing near Mr. Singer's desk was a young man. Sharlynn couldn't make out all the details of his features, but judging by the giddy twittering coming from the girls in the room he must be quite good looking. She noticed that the guys were looking at him with a nearly opposite reaction. She gathered that the boys in her homeroom were judging him as competition.
Mr. Singer raised his hands to get everyone's attention. Once the noise had settled down to a low murmur he spoke.
Mr. Singer
Everyone I would like you to meet a new student. Welcome Jackson Roberts to our class.
There was a smattering of hellos but most of the class just continued to share at him.
Mr. Singer
Jackson you can go take a seat by Sharlynn for right now.
Jackson
Ok.
Jackson
Who is Sharlynn?
Mr. Singer chuckled good naturedly.
Mr. Singer
Whoops. Sharlynn could you raise your hand?
Sharlynn raised her hand then watched as the new kid sauntered back to the empty seat right next to hers. He sat down and she watched him expectantly. Jackson Roberts sat in his seat and stared straight ahead, not even attempting to look in Sharlynn's direction. Sharlynn sighed in disappointment, but wasn't really surprised.
She was basically invisible to everyone else. Why should it be any different with the new guy?
