The morning arrived fresh and bright as Dona Maria and Victoria prepared to go to the dispensary in the other neighborhood. Victoria, however, felt a whirlwind of nerves in her stomach. As they approached the place, her mind overflowed with questions and fears about what was going to happen.
The dispensary was a modest building, with a white-painted facade that had worn over time. A wooden sign hung over the door, announcing the name of the place in blue letters. Upon entering, the smell of disinfectant and medicine enveloped her. The waiting room was full of patients, some with small children, others with expressions of concern. The chairs were metal, cold and somewhat uncomfortable, but at least they offered a place to sit.
"Remember, Victoria, everything will be alright," Dona Maria said to her, noticing the unease on her face. "It's just a check-up. The doctor will help you."
Victoria nodded, but her hands trembled slightly. They approached the reception desk, where a curly-haired receptionist with glasses smiled at them kindly.
"Good morning, how can I help you?" the receptionist asked.
"Hello, we've come to register. My granddaughter needs attention," Dona Maria replied, using the word "granddaughter" firmly, as if that gave more weight to the situation.
"Of course, what is the patient's name?" the receptionist asked, typing on her computer.
"Victoria Torres," Victoria replied, feeling a small relief in saying her name.
Once registered, they sat in the waiting chairs, surrounded by murmurs and the sound of children playing. Although her mind was full of anxiety, Dona Maria's presence brought her comfort.
"Try to take a deep breath, dear. There's no reason for you to be nervous. The doctor is very kind," Dona Maria said, giving her hand a light pat.
After about fifteen minutes that seemed like an eternity, her name was called.
"Victoria Torres, please," the receptionist announced, and they both stood up.
They entered the small office, where a doctor in her thirties greeted them with a warm smile.
"Hello! I'm Dr. Beatriz Fernandez. It's a pleasure to meet you," she said, extending her hand in greeting.
"Hello, Doctor. I'm Victoria, and this is my grandmother, Maria," Victoria introduced herself, feeling her nervousness beginning to fade a little.
"How do you do, Maria?" the doctor greeted, before turning her attention to Victoria. "Please, take a seat. What is the reason for your consultation?"
Victoria took a moment to gather her courage before answering.
"I'm pregnant and I want to know how my pregnancy is going," she said, biting her lip.
The doctor showed a bit of surprise on her face at how young Victoria looked, but she didn't show any kind of judgment.
"It is very important that you feel comfortable here. We are going to ask you some questions," she said, taking her pen and a notebook. "When was the last time you menstruated?"
Victoria gave her the date, and the doctor began to make calculations in her mind.
"It seems that you are between seven and eight weeks pregnant. It's a beautiful moment, although it can be overwhelming. Do you have any symptoms that worry you?"
Victoria shook her head.
"Just a little nausea, but my grandmother Maria has helped me with that," she replied, looking at Dona Maria with great gratitude.
"That's normal." The doctor asked more routine questions while writing everything down. "Now, here are some instructions. You will need to have some tests and an ultrasound to make sure everything is okay and to know the exact gestation time," said the doctor, while writing on a sheet. "I will give you an order for the hospital, and also some advice on nutrition and care during pregnancy."
"Thank you, Doctor," said Victoria, feeling relieved to hear that the doctor was not judging her for her age and was willing to help her.
Once the consultation was over, Victoria and Dona Maria left the dispensary, feeling a weight lifted from their hearts.
"Now let's go to the market to buy a few things for the kitchen," said Dona Maria, animated.
As they walked, Victoria saw a stall that sold roasted corn on the cob, and suddenly she craved one with lots of butter.
"Can we buy a corn on the cob?" she asked with a smile.
"Of course, dear. A whim won't hurt anyone," Dona Maria replied, laughing.
Victoria went to the stall and ordered a corn on the cob for herself and one for Dona Maria. They enjoyed their corns while strolling through the market, and Victoria felt that the warmth of the food and the love of that angel filled her with happiness.
Upon returning to the boarding house, the day progressed in an atmosphere of tranquility and closeness. They prepared dinner together and shared moments of laughter, which further strengthened the bond between them.
Before going to sleep, Victoria felt ready to face the next day, when she would perform the tests and the ultrasound that would allow her to see and know about her baby. With a heart full of hope, she settled into her bed, smiling as she thought about the new chapter that was about to begin. That night she didn't cry either, although she still felt an emptiness in her chest, she asked God for her mother and also for her baby, she thanked Azucena and Maria wishing many blessings for them for having helped her.
