Episode 4: Unanswered Questions

Kim Taehyung moved through the darkened streets like a shadow, his mind racing with thoughts he couldn’t quiet. He had never felt this out of control before. Every hit he had taken in the past had been simple—target, eliminate, disappear. There was no room for hesitation, no time to question. But Jeon Jungkook had broken through the carefully constructed armor Taehyung wore like a second skin, leaving him feeling exposed and confused.

Taehyung cursed under his breath, his fists clenching at his sides as he stalked toward the alley where his motorcycle was hidden. He had been a fool to let Jungkook get under his skin. That man was dangerous, not just because of his power, but because of the way he saw things. Taehyung could still feel the weight of Jungkook’s gaze, the way his touch had sent electricity through his veins. It was unnatural.

As he reached his bike, Taehyung paused, looking over his shoulder toward the direction of Jungkook’s mansion. He wasn’t used to walking away from a mission, and the unfinished business gnawed at him. But this was different. For some reason, Taehyung couldn’t bring himself to pull the trigger, even when the perfect opportunity presented itself.

What was it about Jeon Jungkook that made Taehyung hesitate? Was it the mafia boss’s confidence? His smug, infuriating smile? Or was it something deeper, something Taehyung didn’t want to acknowledge?

His thoughts were interrupted by the vibrating of his phone in his pocket. He pulled it out, frowning when he saw the message on the screen.

“Return to base. Now.”

The message was from his handler, the one person who gave him his assignments. Taehyung’s frown deepened. His handler rarely contacted him directly, only when something urgent had come up. Whatever it was, it couldn’t be good.

With a sigh, Taehyung straddled his bike and revved the engine. He had been planning on taking some time to process everything that had happened tonight, but it seemed like fate had other plans. The roar of the engine drowned out his thoughts as he sped down the narrow streets, his mind still tangled in the web that Jungkook had spun around him.

The ride to the base took less than thirty minutes, but the tension in Taehyung’s chest only grew as he pulled into the underground garage. The base was located in a nondescript building on the outskirts of the city, hidden in plain sight. Taehyung parked his bike and headed for the elevator, his mind already racing with possibilities.

The elevator doors slid open to reveal the sterile, dimly lit corridor that led to the control room. Taehyung’s footsteps echoed off the metal walls as he approached the door, his fingers unconsciously brushing against the gun holstered at his side. The familiar weight of the weapon was comforting, but tonight, it felt different. Lighter, perhaps. Less certain.

He pushed open the door to the control room, greeted by the cold, sharp voice of his handler.

“You failed.”

Taehyung’s eyes flicked toward the figure standing in front of the massive screens that lined the room’s far wall. His handler, a man known only as Jin, stood with his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. Jin was tall, with sharp features and dark, calculating eyes that seemed to see through everything. He had been the one to recruit Taehyung years ago, and he had never been the forgiving type.

“I didn’t fail,” Taehyung said evenly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. “The job’s not done yet, but I’ll finish it.”

Jin’s eyes narrowed as he studied Taehyung’s face. “You walked away. That’s not like you.”

Taehyung didn’t flinch under Jin’s gaze, but inside, the truth was harder to swallow. He had walked away, but he didn’t know why. Something about Jungkook had made him hesitate, and now, standing in front of Jin, he felt that hesitation burning like a scar.

“I’ll handle it,” Taehyung repeated, though his voice lacked the usual sharpness.

Jin remained silent for a moment, his gaze piercing through Taehyung’s calm facade. “You’ve never hesitated before, Ghost. Jeon Jungkook is dangerous. You need to eliminate him before he becomes a bigger problem.”

Taehyung’s jaw tightened. He knew that. Jungkook was powerful, unpredictable, and there were rumors that he was planning something big—something that could upset the delicate balance of power in the city’s underworld. But knowing all of that didn’t make it easier to pull the trigger.

“I will,” Taehyung said, but the words felt hollow.

Jin’s eyes flicked to the screen, which displayed live footage of Jungkook’s mansion. “He’s a threat, Taehyung. Don’t let him get inside your head.”

Taehyung’s stomach twisted at the words. It was too late for that. Jungkook was already under his skin, and Taehyung couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t just Jungkook’s power that was the problem. It was the way he had looked at him—the way he had made Taehyung feel… seen.

“I won’t let it happen again,” Taehyung said, though he wasn’t sure who he was trying to convince—Jin, or himself.

Jin’s expression remained hard, but he nodded. “Good. You’ve got 48 hours to finish the job. Don’t come back here until it’s done.”

Taehyung turned to leave, but Jin’s voice stopped him at the door.

“And Taehyung—don’t forget who you are. You’re the Ghost. No distractions. No weaknesses.”

Taehyung didn’t respond as he left the room, but Jin’s words echoed in his mind long after the door closed behind him. No distractions. No weaknesses.

But what if Jungkook wasn’t just a distraction? What if he was something more dangerous than that—something Taehyung couldn’t afford to ignore?

---

As Taehyung rode through the city streets, the wind whipping through his hair, he couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was starting to spiral out of control. Jungkook was a target, but he was also something else. Something that Taehyung couldn’t put into words.

And that was the most dangerous part.
