The Failed Assassination

Episode 2: A Failed Assassination

Kim Taehyung stood before the mirror, his sharp eyes tracing the reflection of his own face—cold, detached, and calm, just as it always had been. But beneath that icy façade, something unsettling lingered. Jeon Jungkook. The mafia boss had thrown him off his game in a way no target ever had. And Taehyung wasn’t used to losing control, not even for a second.

It wasn’t the failed hit that bothered him. Taehyung had abandoned missions before, not out of fear, but strategy. What bothered him now was the look in Jungkook’s eyes—the way the man had smirked, as if he had known exactly where Taehyung was positioned. There was no logical explanation for how Jungkook had sensed him. He was the Ghost, invisible to the world. No one ever saw him coming. No one except Jeon Jungkook.

The gala was a blur in his mind. From his vantage point high above, Taehyung had watched the elite of the city move like pawns in a game orchestrated by Jungkook. The mafia boss had been at the center of it all, the nucleus of power and control. And when Taehyung had his target in the crosshairs, ready to pull the trigger, Jungkook had looked right at him.

Taehyung's hands were steady as he recalled the moment. His finger had hovered over the trigger, his breath held perfectly, his heartbeat slowing. And then, Jungkook’s eyes met his. It was like staring down the barrel of a gun himself—so intense, so sharp. Jungkook had known, and not just in the way a paranoid mafia boss might sense danger. No, Jungkook had smiled, as if welcoming the challenge. As if daring him to shoot.

Taehyung turned away from the mirror, grabbing his leather jacket as he prepared to leave his safehouse. He couldn’t let this distraction get to him. Jungkook had to be eliminated, and now Taehyung was determined to make it happen, if only to prove that no one could rattle him. Not even a man like Jeon Jungkook.

Hours later, Taehyung was perched on the rooftop of an old industrial building across from Jeon Jungkook's headquarters. The structure was a fortress, surrounded by high fences, armed guards, and security cameras. But none of that mattered to Taehyung. He had infiltrated far more secure places before. Tonight, he would finish what he started.

From his vantage point, Taehyung could see everything—the guards patrolling, the movements of the staff, and the black cars that entered and exited the gates. His eyes flicked over each detail, memorizing the patterns, looking for the opening he needed. It was methodical, precise, just like every other mission he had ever completed. But the lingering doubt from their last encounter gnawed at him.

After an hour of watching, the opportunity presented itself. A delivery truck pulled up to the gate, and the guards, momentarily distracted, checked the paperwork. Taehyung made his move, scaling the wall with the ease of a predator stalking its prey. He landed silently on the other side, blending into the darkness. His steps were light, calculated, as he moved toward the main building.

Taehyung’s eyes remained focused as he approached the building’s side entrance. A single guard stood nearby, but he didn’t see Taehyung coming. In one swift motion, Taehyung struck, disabling the guard with a silent blow to the neck. The man crumpled to the ground without making a sound.

Slipping inside the building, Taehyung’s senses heightened. The mansion was lavish, full of priceless artwork and fine furnishings, but it reeked of power—power that Jungkook wielded with an iron grip. Moving through the corridors, Taehyung found his way to the upper floors, where Jungkook’s private office was located. His hand tightened around the silenced pistol holstered at his side. This time, there would be no mistakes.

But as he reached the door to Jungkook’s office, something felt off. It was too quiet, too easy. His instincts, honed from years of survival, screamed at him that something was wrong. He paused, ears straining for any sound. Then, before he could react, a voice broke the silence.

“You’re late, Ghost.”

Taehyung’s eyes narrowed. The voice was smooth, confident, and infuriatingly familiar. Slowly, he pushed open the door to the office. There, sitting behind the grand mahogany desk, was Jeon Jungkook, leaning back in his chair as if he had been expecting him all night. His dark eyes glinted with amusement, and that damn smirk played across his lips.

“I was wondering when you’d show up,” Jungkook said, casually, as if they were old friends meeting for drinks. He stood slowly, his movements fluid and deliberate, like a panther preparing to strike. “You know, most people don’t get a second chance with me. Consider yourself lucky.”

Taehyung’s blood boiled, but outwardly he remained calm. He stepped into the room, his gun drawn and aimed directly at Jungkook. “I don’t miss twice.”

Jungkook chuckled softly, walking around the desk to stand in front of Taehyung, his hands casually in his pockets. He was unarmed, but there was no fear in his eyes. “You sure about that?”

Taehyung’s finger twitched on the trigger, but something about the way Jungkook looked at him made him hesitate. Jungkook’s gaze was piercing, dark and unreadable, but there was something else there—something that made Taehyung’s heart race in a way it never had before.

“I’ve done my research on you, Taehyung,” Jungkook continued, his voice low and confident. “You’re the best. Cold, precise, no strings attached. But there’s one thing you don’t realize.” He took a step closer, his eyes never leaving Taehyung’s. “This isn’t a normal job. And I’m not a normal target.”

For the first time in his career, Taehyung felt unsure. His grip tightened on the gun, but his focus was faltering. How did Jungkook know so much about him? And more importantly, why did Taehyung feel drawn to this man who should have been dead by now?

As Jungkook’s smirk deepened, Taehyung realized that this game was far from over—and it had just gotten a lot more dangerous.
