CHAPTER 3
**I’m a waste of resources. **
And I am not even kidding…
Walking into the school early in the morning, I felt so sleep-deprived after staying up all night to stalk a certain someone that I was pretty certain that I may have looked like a zombie to at least one person who happened to come across me. Today was not hot and humid like the other days of summer, it was quite chilly, it had been so for a few days now and I felt like I was getting way too greedy asking for more of those days.
I felt a little better as the refreshing morning air hit my face and the silence was enjoyable.
Someone ran past me on the pavement, to the school playground, chasing after another one. After playing around for a bit, they both fell down on the ground and laughter filled the whole silent atmosphere of the school.
They were friends, having fun, enjoying each other’s company and creating fond memories.
Then it hit me…I really will never have any fond high school memories like this. I was wary of my classmates and their actions but still, somewhere deep inside me, I also wanted a friend of my own, something I never had.
As those thoughts sunk in, I finally noticed someone stealing repetitive glances at me.
**Sherwin Lin. **
Standing about two hands away from where I was, he was being the someone who was stealing glances at me. Seeing I caught on with him, a red tint spread across his face.
Wait no…
The red tint was already there on his face, it just darkened and became more prominent.
I…was fascinated. Sherwin Lin blushing, maybe, was a sight to see and I would gladly like it if I got to see this scenic beauty everyday. It finally started making sense why girls would go all gaga over him. He was academically a top student, was handsome, had good mannerisms and now, he is cute.
We locked eyes, he seemed embarrassed but anyway decided to greet me, “Good morning, Jian.”
It was something I knew since the day I had heard Sherwin speak, which was years ago, that Sherwin has a really nice voice, something that would put you to sleep.
“Yeah, morning,” I replied back with a smile.
Okay now. I have no clue what came over me but just like that, without any apparent reason , I asked Sherwin, "Hey, come and have lunch with me today, only if you are okay with it. ”
Maybe I should not have said that because just as I asked him this, Sherwin, who seemed to have calmed himself down with no more flushed face, again had his blood rushing to his ears and face blushed on hearing this invitation.
Even though I knew he was facing internal chaos, he managed to give me an answer, “Uh…sure. Should I go to your class then…?”
“Yeah, why not. We don’t really have anyone staying inside class during the lunch break, everyone is somewhere other than the classroom. So it will be quite peaceful and less hectic, unless you prefer that.”
“No problem,” Sherwin said.
It seemed like after that, he wanted to say something as he kept murmuring something under his breath, too low for me to make out exactly what he was saying.
“Is there something else?” I asked.
“Uh... nothing else. I will just ask you during lunch.”
“I see. See you around then.”
“Yeah…”
And with that, I took off to class. I had no clue whether Sherwin had seen my flushed face due to embarrassment for my impulsive question but I could surely feel my ears and cheeks burning up. As I turned back one last time before entering the school building to take a glance at Sherwin, my eyes widened.
We locked eyes once more. His eyes were still tracing me when I left.
