Chapter 4 - The New Girl

The new girl, Viola has been working for a week. She found it hard to adapt, I can understand that Viola is fresh graduate and still learning about this company, but sure she's going to get used to it.

Viola peeked around the door again just in time to see someone walk into the office and then close the door. I stop typing then lengthen my neck, she looks clueless, “Anything I could help?” I asked, since I realized I am the only one in this office. Viola stood in front of my desk, hesitate to ask. She has her desk right beside me, Viola is in charge of the company's Instagram, I noticed she took many times to enter Alinka office for the caption, picture and stuffs.

“Ummm” she mumbled, “I was about to ask you” she scratched her cheek gently, “About the software you use for editing”

I nod my head, “Oh sure”. The way she expressed her hesitation, her accent and the way she talks sounds like Tiere a lot.

I type on the keyboard, tilting my glasses, stretched my arm, “Give me your flashdisk, I’ll send you all of the apps I’m using”

“Okay” she smiles so widely, rummaging her light beige blazer. The first thing you need to remember while working in this company is- You need to carry at least a 64GB flashdisk with you. Everything we need for working will be saved inside the disk we are carrying. We apply the “Go Green” here, less paper the better. This is how it is going. Raft.corp is amazing.

“Thank you, senior” she said as she was about to leave.

“Ahh” a single word to stop her, she looked back innocently, “Hm?”

“Don’t call me senior. Alinka was just kidding. Call me Ryan” my head department used to joke without smiling, and people who don’t know her mostly take it seriously.

“Okay” Viola smiles. I admit it she’s cute, everyone in this building took her as a sight since there's mostly nerds and guys. She’s still young, just graduated from college. Not that young, but she’s currently the youngest among all the employees here.

Viola leaves the office.

I found it rare to have Viola as the only woman in this room, moreover when she sat beside me everyday.

The other 3 men finally arrived, Gani, Fred, and Wilson.

“Hoammm” the sleepyhead, Gani. Always late, often take leave to pantry for hours for a short nap.

“Where’s the new girl?” Fred, the women seeker. Always talking about girls on Instagram.

And the shadow man, Wilson. He is the only one who always give me a heart attack. Imagine that when you are having yourself busy with works, or you’re having a lovey dovey messaging with your girlfriend. You are supposed to be alone, but that man, Wilson came out from nowhere. His footsteps are barely sound. I thought he is a ghost at first, plus he rarely talk. But he smoke hard.

“Just left, maybe another training with Alinka” I said with a shrug.

“Ahhhhh, Alinka should gives me chance to train her instead” Fred shook his head as Gani smacked his head once he heard Fred talking about girls again. Both Gani and Fred were colleagues before working here so they are pretty close to each other, and they still play like children while they are actually 27 this year.

About Wilson, don’t ask me. I know nothing about that mystery man. His presence sometimes gives me chill, he’ll look at you with his sharp almond eyes all of sudden, for no reason. I think he puts some curse on me.

Wilson took a seat and begin typing, as he took out a box of cigarettes from his pocket and put it beside him.

“But I wonder why Alinka add someone for the social media C department instead of choosing one of us” said Gani, “What do you think, bro?”- he angled me.

“Maybe because we all have our things to do yet to take anything else for additional?” I assumed.

“I’ll be gladly took the responsibilities for additional salary” he implied.

It has to be reason, since social media has become a necessary daily activity.

We are only three before Viola was hired. Wilson is in charge with the online shopping from 2 apps. Fred is in charge of the application store for Android and iOS. Gani is in charge of the advertisements. And I am in charge for the websites. Others from the next office may be the accountant with IT basics, designers, and else. Raft.corp is too busy to hire amateurs, or double their employee’s work for a highly expectation results. I understand this company a lot that’s why I think this suits me. I believe they hire Viola for reasons, plus her work is quiet simple.

A sudden barge in make us all startled, “I messed up!” Viola came in rush and her eyes are wide as chocolate ball.

“What? What happened?!” Fred who has instantly jumped and begin asking so quickly, he is just a woman attention seeker.

“I just made a mistake!” she dropped her head on her palms, "Oh no oh no oh no"

Really? Another one?

On her second day, she posted the wrong picture, the second mistake she made was delivering the wrong content to Instagram DM’s. I wonder what she did for now.

“I just picked the wrong font!! Alinka must be so angry!!” she dropped her shoulders and walks towards her desk desperately.

I took a peek at her, she’s just staring at her blankcomputer screen with lips jutted out. I twisted my chair facing her, “Do you want me to help you?”

I'm not trying to grant some attentions from her, I am not interested to her. I used to be selfish but she's phrasing herself alike my girlfriend that make me want to help her.

My office hours ended. I could finally take some me time and waits for Tiere to take off from work. She hasn’t replied my text since lunch. Is she that busy? Working as secretary in a big company must be hard and extremely busy. Plus she has drawings to finish once she gets home. I wish I could help her, at least a little useful as a boyfriend.

I sighed as I was about to press my thumb on the checkout, but another thumb is approaching. I flinched as I unpurposely touched that tiny thumb and turn my head, found the new girl standing beside me, Viola pulled her hand and bow her head once, “Sorry, you first”

Without responding her, I took my check out and leave.
