“I already spent more time with you than with my own mother.” I looked back. He always made me confused with his words but over analyzing was something I couldn’t afford to do. A maids daughter is brought up to believe that you’re born with obsticles. That the only way to achieve anything is by setting up goals but never high enough to think you’ll be like the Moon family.
“Spending time with me should be top priority don’t you think.” he smiled back, his eyes turned to his work book.
He tilted his head just a little as he continued to write down his notes. His smile always radiated brightly. It was hard to argue with him when he smiled like that. All he ever had to do was show off that smile and every girl in Stewart would be at his mercy. He was considered a breath of fresh air among the girls at Stewart Academy. A school that was so centered on the rich and spoiled. Yet he had a strong presence everywhere he went. He spoke very little about himself and the most that was known of him came from gossip magazines detailing his family’s accomplishments. Since little was known of his personality. That made him even more mysterious and seemed to always ranked #1 across every student’s crush list. He was by far the most well off student in Stewart Academy. Many of the students attending Stewart worked under the umbrella companies of Moon Corp.
Moon Corp’s founding roots came from the pharmaceutical industry that eventually stretched out into other types of industries. For instance, Moon cosmetic was handled by Minsoo’s mother, moon cosmetics alone was a multi million dollar company. Seo-joon also handled every part of the fashion industry that Moon Corp had influence in.
Time passed rather quickly before I knew it we were graduating middle school. I remained a loner for the most part while Minsoo remained popular throughout middle school. Before I could blink I realized high school had started. Stewart academy taught middle school and high school. The high school building was much bigger making room for more clubs. The school was a 10 minute driving distance from the middle school annex.
Stewart Academy nicknamed “for the spoiled and rich” by regulars was known for its art program and most importantly for its archery and soccer club. Stewart Academy was founded by Ahn Siwoo back in the 1960s. It was build for his grandson ahn Jung-mok after he turned 13. The school spanned 2 generation with ahn Jung-mok becoming chairman shortly after his father retired. It was rumored that his son went to Stewart but because the school was strict on favoritism it was said that his last name was hidden on all official paperwork.
“The art club was canceled today so wait for me.”
I heard Minsoo say as we prepared to exit the car. He seemed to be in a sour mood.
“Okay I’ll study at the main building then” I responded back.
He nodded and made his way out of the car. His walk was noticeable. He could’ve easily been a model if he had wished. But he was adamant that he would never scope so low. He hated the entertainment business as it made his mother cold and calculating.
My classes were were situated on the 3rd floor of the building. High school was no different than middle school. I mostly kept to myself but rumors still circulated around the school that I worked for Minsoo’s family. The constant talk about me died down significantly after that. Almost as if the jealousy subsided and all that was left was pity and disgust. Although I was still asked plenty of times to not get close to Minsoo at school by both the students and the maids at the main building.
“I hope you understand that going to Stewart Academy does not mean your automatically like them.” Head maid Su-hee added as she handed me the laundry. It was a cold Friday night and my mother had gotten sick with a fever. I was tasked to take her place. She was suppose to finish all the laundry duty that day. I rarely worked with the head maid as she was tasked with ordering everybody around. I believe that day she wanted to make her stance known in a way that would leave wounds in my heart.
“Idk what you mean by that.” I spoke up, I was always uncomfortable around her. She seemed to always look at me with disdain.
“You know exactly what I mean. You came to this house when you were only 5 and almost overnight you became young sir Minsoo’s playmate. But never forget that you aren’t his friend. I have taken care of Minsoo since he was 3 months old and I was tasked to always keep an eye out for growing weeds.” Su-hee was always like that, she spoke bluntly to make her point heard.
“I don’t know what made you think that I wanted something more from Minsoo but I consider him the son of the Moon family and nothing more.” I lowered my head. This wasn’t the first time I was given this talk. I was told daily by my own mother that I was to always respect and put boundaries between me and Minsoo.
“It’s easy to think that Minsoo is kind with you but you must always remember that he will never look at you the same way you might look at h—”
“Stop!” I looked at her this time with anger. How can she think that I was ever trying anything with Minsoo.
“I don’t have any kind of feelings that your trying to accuse me of.” I fought back tears. How much longer did have to face prejudice because I was a maids daughter.
She seemed shocked at first but that quickly changed as she frowned. She started folding the basket of clothes she had taken from the laundry machine. The last batch of laundry of the night.
“I’m glad. You aren’t someone Minsoo would want even if you think you had the chance. You might speak the language and your mother might be korean but you will always be a foreigner in this country”
Stunned I took a step back. I wanted to tell her off, to scream at her. How dare she say I was not welcomed here. That because I had my fathers blood I was dirty. I wanted to do so much but all I did was cry. I walked out of there with tears streaming down my face. I knew I wasn’t ever good for anybody. I wasn’t good for an average korean and I certainly wasn’t good for Minsoo.
