Keal’S Vanguard
The Mediator's impact still resonated in the skies, a constant reminder of the world's new reality. The once-blue heavens were now a permanent gray, a morose echo of the devastation below. The air reeked of smoke and ash, a toxic reminder of the world's downfall.
Kael stood atop a ruined building, his eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of movement. His squad, the Vanguard, had been tracking a pack of mutated creatures for hours. The silver and dark blue insignia on his arm gleamed in the dim light, a symbol of their mission to protect humanity.
"Kael, we've got something!" Maya called out, her voice barely audible over the wind.
Kael leapt down, his enhanced senses on high alert. As he landed beside Maya, he saw it – a young girl, no more than ten years old, cowering in the corner of the alleyway.
"She's clean," Maya said, scanning the girl with a device. "No signs of mutation."
Kael's instincts screamed otherwise. There was something about this girl...
"What's your name?" Kael asked, his voice firm but gentle.
The girl hesitated, "A-Ava."
As they stood there, a chorus of screeches echoed through the distance. Kael's head snapped towards the sound.
"Incoming," he growled, eyes locked on the horizon. "Mutated pack, about two hundred yards out."
Ava trembled, her eyes wide with fear. "P-please don't leave me."
Maya placed a reassuring hand on Ava's shoulder. "We're not going anywhere, kiddo. Kael, what's the plan?"
Kael assessed the situation. The pack was closing in, and their position was vulnerable. "We need to move, now!"
The Vanguard squad sprang into action, forming a protective circle around Ava. Kael led the way, his rifle at the ready.
As they navigated through the ruins, the pack closed in. Kael's squad fought off the creatures, their movements precise and calculated. Ava watched in horror as they took down the mutated beasts.
"How many?" Kael asked, his voice low and even.
"About a dozen," Maya replied, her eyes scanning the surroundings. "We can take them."
Kael nodded. "Let's move. We need to find cover."
The squad pushed forward, fighting off the creatures as they went. Ava stumbled, but Maya caught her, keeping her safe.
As they turned a corner, Kael spotted a potential safe haven – an abandoned factory. "There!" he shouted, pointing to the building.
The squad sprinted towards the factory, the pack hot on their heels. They burst through the doors, slamming them shut behind them.
Panting, Kael leaned against the door, his rifle still trained on the entrance. "Secure the perimeter," he ordered.
The squad fanned out, checking the factory for any signs of danger. Ava collapsed to the ground, her eyes wide with fear.
Maya knelt beside her, offering a canteen of water. "Hey, kiddo, you're safe now. What's your story?"
Ava hesitated, her eyes darting around the room. "I...I was with my family. We were trying to find food. Then...then the creatures came."
Kael's instincts still nagged at him. There was more to Ava's story, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
As the night wore on, the Vanguard squad tended to their wounds and gear. Kael kept a close eye on Ava, his mind racing with questions.
What secrets was she hiding?
And what lay ahead for the Vanguard squad?
The night wore on, the silence punctuated by the distant howls of mutated creatures. Kael's eyes never left Ava, his grip on his rifle tightening.
In this world, survival depended on trust – and Kael wasn't sure if he could trust Ava just yet.
The hours ticked by, the squad maintaining a watchful eye on Ava. Kael knew that in this new world, loyalty was a luxury few could afford.
As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, Kael called a meeting with his squad. "Alright, let's discuss our next move. We can't stay here for long."
Maya spoke up, "We should interrogate Ava further. See if she's telling us everything."
Kael nodded. "Agreed. Let's get her to talk."
The squad approached Ava, who looked up at them with a mix of fear and determination.
"Listen, kiddo," Maya said, her voice firm but gentle. "We need to know what's going on. What were you doing out there?"
Ava hesitated, her eyes darting around the room. "I...I was telling the truth. I was looking for food."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "We're not buying it. There's something you're not telling us."
Ava's eyes flashed with defiance. "I'm telling you the truth! I don't know what you want me to say!"
The standoff continued, with neither side backing down. Kael knew he had to make a decision – trust Ava or keep her at arm's length.
As the tension hung in the air, Kael's comms device crackled to life. "Vanguard squad, this is HQ. We have a situation brewing. Report to coordinates 43.72, 122.39 for extraction."
Kael's eyes locked onto Ava. "It looks like we've got a decision to make, kiddo. Are you coming with us, or do you want to take your chances alone?"
The fate of the Vanguard squad, and Ava's future, hung in the balance.
