Chapter 4
Lonely Birdy
I woke up, Silvi was cleaning herself on my windowsill, ruffling her feathers, she didn't seem to have noticed that I was awake. When she noticed me, she flew over and nestled herself on my lap, a warm good-morning I believe.
"Good morning Silvi, how are you?" it may seem weird talking to a bird but, now that we didn't argue as much as before, it was a lot calmer in my room.
Silvi nudged my hand playfully in response. Good morning to me I guess.
Today, I let Silvi out to my yard before going to school. She was happy and content there anyways, messing with my flowers that I had planted in the summer before her arrival.
When I got to school, Claira was there waiting for me.
"Hey, Anna! How is Silvi?" Claira asked.
"Silvi is fine, she's in my yard messing with my flowers," I replied back, hoping that Silvi didn't pluck my flowers out and create a mess.
"You actually let her out? I thought that you wanted her to be in your room to keep trouble away," Claira was deep in thoughts as if she wanted to ask me about something but afraid that it would offend me.
I answered her, "Oh, let that stubborn Silvi out once in a while would help her relax instead of causing a tantrum in my room. Besides, she needs physical exercise outside too."
"Oh, I see," Claira walked to our first class. Room D-14, which is our art class. I glanced inside, Mrs. Mills, our art teacher, was grading our latest projects.
"Good-morning, Mrs.Mills, how are you?" Me and Claira greeted Mrs.Mills and took our seats.
"Since you two girls are here, I'll tell you about your grades, Claira got a B+ because she forgot her spacing of the eye. And you Anna...," I got nervous, I was a straight-A student and didn't want anything to fail.
"...got an A as usual. Very good." Mrs.Mill continued to tour us through how to properly shade an eye so we have an idea of our next lesson today.
Time passed slowly, I wondered what Silvi could possibly be doing at home.
“Ok, class dismissed!” Mr.Long, our computer class teacher said.
I walked with Mike and Claira to our PE class, while walking we talked about Silvi. A topic that I had wished to avoid.
“So, Anna, what is it like having a swan as a pet. I mean, you're a ‘swan’ so it’ll only be appropriate if you have a swan as a pet right?” Claira jokes.
“Hah-hah, Claira, you’re so funny,” I replied to Claira.
“Yeah, that’s Claira! But Anna, Claira is technically right-- you are a ‘swan’,” we all laughed at that.
“So, Anna, what does Silvi do every day? Whenever I pass by, she looks at me like I have three eyes,” Mike laughed at his own joke.
“Oh, Silvi’s agenda goes like this. Eat, play, clean, eat, and I don’t know... I’m at school or somewhere else. It depends,” I joked along, comfortable with my tiny group of friends.
“Oh, come on! I just wanted to crack a joke!” Mike nudged me and we all started to laugh.
“Oh I know, I also wanted to crack a joke,” that sent us into hysterics.
We went to our gym class together, and everything was fine.
Everything was back to normal.
Until I noticed Silvi’s feathers getting grayer and grayer.
She became less enthusiastic each day, I became worried. Each day, I entertained her, brought her to many different places... nothing seemed to work! She wasn’t happy and content for many weeks, something seemed missing in her life.
Silvi was usually a happy bird, but every day, she just looked sadly out the window, watching something in the distance. I even asked Claira and Mike to come over to entertain her.
One day, she was looking out the window again, I wondered what would cheer her up even the tiniest bit. I glazed over and I saw two birds playing together. I slowly came to me what she wanted-- she wanted to be with other birds! So I let her go outside to play with the other birds, she seemed curious at first, looking at me uncertainly.
“Go on, go play with those birds!” she glanced at those birds and started forward. At first, she seemed bored with those birds, but slowly but surely, she was getting more and more enthusiastic with them. I was glad for my success in understanding what Silvi wanted.
After a few weeks of playing with those birds, they became friends. Every day when I left for school, they were outside playing. When I came back, she was sleeping quite comfortably.
Sadly, those birds went away after a month with her. She was fine at first but she was lonely.
Usually, she would still be enthusiastic when I come home, but today, she was very inactive. She let her golden locket shine brightly underneath the sunlight that shined on her. I wonder what’s in the locket.
I started for her locket, she noticed and moved away from me. I crept closer, she moved farther away. This became a game of hide and seek. She was the hider and I was the seeker.
When I had finally grabbed her locket, she flapped her wings, starting me, causing me to let go of the locket for a second. But I pulled it tighter, she stopped flapping and gave me an expression that seemed to say: I give up, you win.
I opened the locket. It was a photo of my mother and her. They looked very happy with each other's company.
I looked sadly away from Silvi, I wondered why Silvi had come to me on that day... Silvi came up to me and snuggled herself in my embrace.
She looked at me, and within 5 seconds, she was asleep.
What a happy bird, she was so special that I didn’t want to lose her or let her go.
But happiness cannot last long, there is always something that will go wrong in life.
This is where her nightly disappearance had started.
