Chapter 4
Cassie’s finger hovered over the blank profile icon like it was a damn bomb.
One tap, and she’d officially step into a world she wanted to. Not for Liam.
For her.
Or maybe for someone who saw her... differently.
She slept thinking about that stupid icon.
Woke up staring at it.
Zoned out in calculus class picturing how she could pose—hair up, or down? Tongue out? No, gross.
Sexy? Was that even in her vocabulary?
It was something totally out of her element.
So when Harper ditched her for cheer practice, Cassie snuck into an empty classroom.
Just her, her phone, and determination.
She hesitated, then angled her front cam. Tilted her head. Pouted—awkwardly, like she’d seen Harper do. It felt wrong. But she tried again.
Nate
Well, well. Caught you in the act.
Cassie jumped. Literally jumped. Her phone slipped from her fingers and clattered to the floor.
She turned, wide-eyed. Nate Carter leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips like this was the best thing he’d seen all day.
Cassie (FL)
What are you doing here?
* snaps*
Nate
Don’t stop on my account.
Cassie scrambled for her phone, heart slamming. Not because of the failed selfie—no, God no. It was the app. The app. She hadn’t closed it.
But Nate beat her to it, scooping up the phone before her.
Nate
Didn’t peg you as the type to worry over a selfie.
Cassie (FL)
Give it back Nate!
But Nate just held it out of reach, laughing as she reached for it like a frantic kitten.
Nate
What, you got nudes on here or something?
Cassie (FL)
NOTHING!
* snapped*
Cassie (FL)
* tried to reach for her phone again*
Cassie (FL)
It’s personal.
Nate
Everything’s personal with you, Rowe.
Finally, after a little more struggling—him dodging, her cursing under her breath—he handed it back
He stepped closer. Too close.
Nate
If you really wanna get that shot—you could use some help.
Cassie (FL)
If you're offering.. Then no.
I don’t need your help😡
She made to storm past him, cheeks burning.
But his hand caught her wrist. Firm. Confident.
Before Cassie could respond or pull back, nate pulls her until her back was pressed against his chest.
All she could think about was....
His chest, warm.
His scent... intoxicating.
His fingers..over hers.
His hand slid down her arm, warm fingers brushing over hers as he wrapped his fingers over hers..on the phone.
Nate
You want it to look natural. Effortless
Nate
You don’t have to work so hard Rowe..
* whispers in her ears*
Cassie shivers. His voice dark velvet.
Nate
Follow what I'm saying like a good girl.
Nate
Tilt your chin. Part your lips—just a little.
His free hand slides to her waist, settling there..to hold her in place.
Cassie blinked, lips parting instinctively..
Nate
Good..now look at the camera.
*whispers*
She should pull back. Her mind screamed. But body couldn’t .
And then—
The camera flashed
Cassie snaps out of the daze..
Nate
you're a natural.
* smirks.. Looking at the screen*
The photo—
Her body flush against his.
His smirk pressed at her neck.
Her eyes dark, lips parted… like she’d just been kissed.
She looks like someone else.
No.
She looks like her. The girl she always wanted to be.
Nate pulls back with a smirk.. Walking out like he didn't just had her spell bound a minute ago.
Cassie was Lying on bed, lights dimmed, phone in hand... Staring at the picture again.
Cassie (FL)
Why did I save this?
…Why do I keep looking at it?
* murmurs to herself*
She likes how she looks.
But she loves how he looks at her.
Cassie (FL)
If I can look this..
Cassie (FL)
Maybe I can do it. The profile picture
She Stands.. adjusting the camera on the table.
Dims light.
Lowers her sleeves, back towards the camera.
Lets her hair down Just enough..to cover her face.
Frame. Focus. Breathe.
Before her mind decides to back out from it... Cassie quickly sets the profile picture.
the phone buzzes almost instantly.
