Chapter 2

CASSIE'S POV
.
Ping!
.
My head snapped up. i blinked, heart pounding like I’d been caught doing something wrong. I scrambled for the phone I’d tossed aside, suddenly hyper-aware of how hot my skin felt beneath the blankets. There it was. One message. From a username I'd never seen before..
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Hotsiren...how hot are we talking about?
.
DeepSignal? The name alone made my cheeks flush. I sat up straighter, pulling my hair over one shoulder as if he could see me.
My breath caught up and I stared for the text, thinking for a reply.. Before
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
Hii
.
God. That was lame. I stared at it for five full seconds before pressing send. Message delivered. Now what?
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
That all I get, HotSiren? A ‘hi’? You don’t sound like a siren.
.
My fingers hovered, trembling slightly before I typed again..
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
I'm new to this
.
There. Honest. Safe.
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
I can tell.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
No offense. You type like you just opened the app with both hands trembling
.
I pulled the blanket tighter around her. And looked around just to make sure if anyone was spying on me or something.. Because was it that obvious?
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
I didn’t expect anyone to text me.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Then consider me your surprise of the night.
.
He was playful, teasing. Not aggressive. But every word felt aimed just right
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
I don't know you
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
“You don’t have to know me to want to be known.”
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
You don’t seem like the kind of girl who names herself ‘HotSiren'
.
My fingers hesitated. That hit close. Too close.
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
What kind do I seem like then?
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
The kind who tries to talk herself out of wanting something… and fails.
.
I sucked in a breath..
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Tell me I'm wrong
.
I couldn't
Because..he wasn't
I swallowed hard. The screen blurred a little as I exhaled, warm breath fogging the glass.
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
What do you want me to say?
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
The truth
.
God, that word felt heavy.
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
That I’m bored. That I was curious.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
And heartbroken.
Wait? How did he?.. Before I could stress on it.. another message appears
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Curious is a beautiful start
.
My fingers hovered. I hated how fast my heart was pounding. Like he could hear it
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
You’re not the only one, you know.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
What do you want?
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
To watch someone shed her skin
.
A slow burn started low in my belly. My lips parted, but nothing came out. I couldn’t look away.
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
You make it sound so dark.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Not dark. Honest.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Raw. Undone
.
My thighs pressed together on instinct. I hated how fast my body responded. I hated that I wanted to see what he’d say next.
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
You don't even know me.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Not yet
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
But I know what that ache feels like
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
It shows up when the lights are off… when the fingers slide lower… when no one’s watching.
.
My breath caught.
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
It doesn’t go away by pretending. It only fades when you stop running from it.
.
@hotsiren
@hotsiren
You’re wrong. I'm not aching because I’m not that kind of a girl..
.
I hit send before I could second-guess it.
The moment it delivered, I regretted everything.
The typing bubble appeared almost instantly.
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
No? That’s cute.
.
Cute? My jaw clenched. I wasn’t trying to be cute. I was—
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
You're lying.
.
God, the nerve of him
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Then why are you still here?
.
I stared at the screen. My lips parted..I didn't have an answer.
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
Why did you change your username? Why didn’t you log off the moment I messaged you?
.
The dots kept pulsing. I swear, they teased more than his words.
.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
You can lie to me, HotSiren.
@deepsignal
@deepsignal
And that’s okay. You’ll stop.
.
The dots blinked again. And then… nothing.
Gone
Silence.
I sat there, staring at the screen like it might pulse back to life. Like maybe he’d come back with something. Something.
But it didn’t come.
And the worst part?...
I kept staring
Why the hell did it bother me so much?i
I didn’t even know him. He could’ve been some creep, some loser playing games. And yet… there was something in the way he spoke. The quiet control. Like he didn’t need to try hard, because he already knew what buttons to press.
And he’d pressed all of mine.
God. I could still feel the words in my chest..
Raw. Undone.
I wasn’t raw. I wasn’t undone. I was—
I stared at the screen again. Still no message.
And now I'm aching. Is this what he was talking about?
.
I groaned into my pillow and flipped onto my back, heart pounding as my thighs clenched like I could somehow erase the tension crawling up my spine.
I should’ve closed the app.
I should’ve deleted it.
I didn't.
And now I didn't want to.
.
.
To be continued....
