Truck without Driver

I wake up at the sound of alarm clock.

Time flies really fast when you want to sleep. I couldn't sleep very well last night. After tossing and turning for a long time, I fell asleep in the morning. And now it's already 7 o'clock.

7 o'clock???

I have to hurry. It's my first class after the long holiday. I can't be late. After washing up, I put on my uniform and put my hair into a ponytail. And check myself in the mirror before leaving.

"Not bad, huh? you look nice." I giggle at myself.

Crap, I'm late.

I run out of my bedroom calling my mom. She's already prepared a tiffin for me.

" Lazy girl, try to get up early" She says putting the tiffin inside my bag.

" It's because you spoil me, Mama." I say while kissing her cheek.

"Your father will be back today. Try to come early. You know he always worry about you." she sighs.

"Yes, yes. My father is coming after a long time. Why won't I be early? Now, I'm so late. Mom, please give me your car keys. I promise I'll be careful." I ask her innocently.

"You crazy girl! You are underage. You go to Jayden's home. I'll give him a call." she say with a hand gesture meaning end of conversation.

"Fine." I pout and start walking towards Jayden's home.

Jayden is my childhood friend. He lives two houses away from ours. Although he is two years older than me, we study in the same school and attend same classes. And because he has got his driving license two years ago, my mom prefers me to go with him rather than driving on my own.

As I pass I notice the remains of burnt house from last night. I pause on my way. What a beautiful house it was. Nothing is left. Everything is burnt and black. Aunt and Uncle must be sad now. I notice some movements behind the ruins. They must have returned. Just when I think of going there to console them, I hear a loud sound of horn. A truck is moving fast towards me. It's too fast I can't escape even if I move.

Within that moment many things happen. I see the truck moving fast. At exact moment someone covers me with his body and brings me to the side of the road. When I open my eyes, I find myself alone on the sidewalk. The truck driver spouts some words and moves ahead.

I am so shocked, I feel my body weak and kneel down to the ground.

When I was facing that truck I didn't see a driver in the driver seat, it was empty. Instead there was black smoke hovering all over the seat. Was that my imagination? It must be, else I wouldn't have seen the driver right now. And who saved me now? Did I unconsciously jump out to the sidewalk?

The sound of my ringtone breaks my imagination.

"Jayden, Yeah, I'm on my way."
