I stood in front of the mirror, smoothing out my dress and trying to calm my nerves. Alex and I were going to his family's house for dinner, and I was a little anxious.
It was one thing to pretend to be engaged in front of my mother, but it was another thing entirely to pretend in front of Alex's entire family.
I took a deep breath and reminded myself that I had been pretending to be in love with Alex for weeks now. I could do this.
As I walked downstairs, Alex was waiting for me in the living room. He looked handsome in his button-down shirt and dark jeans, and I felt a little flutter in my chest.
"Hey," he said, smiling at me. "You look beautiful."
I blushed and smiled back at him. "Thanks," I said. "You don't look so bad yourself."
As we drove to Alex's family's house, I couldn't help but feel a little nervous. What if they didn't believe us? What if they saw right through our fake engagement?
When we arrived at the house, Alex's family was waiting for us in the living room. His parents, his younger sister, and even his grandfather were all there, smiling and congratulating us on our engagement.
I felt a little overwhelmed, but Alex took my hand and led me through the crowd, introducing me to everyone and making sure I felt included.
As we sat down to dinner, I couldn't help but feel a little more at ease. Alex's family was warm and welcoming, and they seemed to genuinely like me.
But as the night wore on, I started to feel a little uncomfortable. Alex's family was asking us so many questions about our engagement and our future plans, and I wasn't sure how to answer them.
Luckily, Alex was there to bail me out, answering all of their questions with ease and making it seem like we had been planning our wedding for months.
As the night came to a close, I felt a little relieved. We had made it through the family dinner without any major mishaps, and Alex's family seemed to have bought our fake engagement hook, line, and sinker.
But as we were saying our goodbyes, Alex's grandfather pulled me aside and whispered, "You know, I'm not sure I believe all of this."
I felt a little jolt of fear, but I tried to stay calm. "What do you mean?" I asked, trying to sound innocent.
Alex's grandfather smiled and patted my hand. "I mean, I've known Alex his whole life, and I've never seen him like this before. He's always been a bit of a ladies' man, but now he seems... different."
I felt a little flutter in my chest at his words, and I couldn't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, our fake engagement was starting to feel a little too real.
As we drove home, Alex turned to me and smiled. "So, how did it go?" he asked.
I shrugged, feeling a little uncertain. "I think it went okay," I said. "But your grandfather seems a little suspicious."
Alex laughed. "Don't worry about him," he said. "He's just a little old-fashioned. He'll come around eventually."
I smiled and nodded, but I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, our fake engagement was starting to unravel.
As we pulled into my driveway, Alex turned to me and said, "Hey, can I ask you something?"
I nodded, feeling a little curious. "What is it?" I asked.
Alex's eyes locked onto mine, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. "Do you ever feel like we're getting a little too good at this?" he asked.
I felt a flutter in my chest at his words, and I couldn't help but wonder what he meant. Was he starting to feel something real for me?
Or was he just trying to make our fake engagement look more convincing?
I didn't have the answers, but I knew one thing for sure: our fake engagement was getting more complicated by the minute.
