Cursed

Mr. Rupert sitting in his chair at the dinning table, reading a newspaper that Alyse took from the mailbox earlier. He was waiting for Calista came down to have their breakfast together. He sips his coffee occasionally whilst his other hand flipping the paper to the other page. He rarely spent his precious time with his only daughter and that makes him feel guilty every time he came to this old manor.

His mother, Patricia Brown who passed away eight years ago adored Calista so much. Calista is the only grandchild in this family. A hundreds years ago, people around here were used to spread a rumor about their family being cursed. He himself didn’t take much afford to deny the rumor since he is uninterested in social life and busy with his own carrier.

This manor that stood up from their first generation embed a mystery about a lost soul that has been sacrificed into this manor. That's the only reason why no families in this town wants to make a relationship with them. The curse still haunted them form generation to generation. It also said that a damsel from this family would be cursed and need a soul to be sacrificed.

Before his mother passed away, she has told him that their ancestor only granted a baby boy. They will not accepted a girl to be born into this family. All member in the family tree are giving birth to a son or nothing. Patricia hates the rules but she helplessly followed whatever suggestion that they told her.

Unfortunately, her first born child is a girl. Her father in law and the whole family ask them to buried the child alive. They tell her about the cursed. But she won't do it. Even she believed about the curse but she can't kill her own child that she loved dearly just because of the mere curse. She won't be that cruel. If she has to face the curse then she will endured with it.

Eventually, She kept the child and giving her all the love in the world that she deserved. But her fate were meant to be short. The child die after a month of age because of some unknown decease. She mourn about a year to her lost child before she pregnant again with a boy. They named him, Rupert Brown.

A tapping sound down from the stairs snap him from his thought. He raised his head to the upstairs only to see his daughter jog down with her school bag hanging on her shoulder. “Be careful honey, don’t missed the stair” He straighten his neck, look up with full of attention. He removed his eye glass to watch his daughter running down the stair clumsily.

“What happen to your etiquette? Did you forget it now?” He says in a low tone half reprimand but keep his wide smile. “I am late.. and I don't need to be polite to you” She lashed back and took her choco glass and gulp down hurriedly. She still mad at him.

Her answer giving a shock into Alyse face. Her eyebrow raise slightly “Calista... watch your words..” She warn her with her bulge eyes while busy served a breakfast into her plate.

She huff but give in. “Okay.. I am sorry.. I just upset that I over slept today and now I will be late to school.” She says apologetically and start to dig in her plate. Mr. Rupert smile with her sincerity and rummage his briefcase. Soon after he put out a neatly wrapped boxes. He shake it and smile to gain Calista’s attention. “A books again?” Calista guessing uninterested. “Nope.. its something you will be like” Mr. Rupert handing the gift to her.

“May I open it now?” She took the gift and ask excitedly. “Sure” with a simple answer, Calista tore the wrapping paper and gasp. “Ohhh.. its a puzzle!!!” She exclaimed happily and run to her father. She hug him tightly and ask. “How did you know I want this?” She tilt her head slightly.

Mr. Rupert took a secret glance to Alyse whilst Alyse make a gesture that she didn’t say anything. Only then Mr. Rupert clear his throat and tell her. “Well, I really adore my daughter and of course I know what she want, didn’t I?” He smile and kiss her cheek.

Calista return his smile and blurt out "Okay.. I forgive you now.. and thank you so much for the gift. " he nod smile. "So how about the dinner..? did you made it? did mom tell anything?" she ask in a straight tone. Mr. Rupert just smile and then urged her to finished her breakfast.

He wont to talk about that now since they didn't made up well last night during the dinner. He cant convinced his ex-wife to remarried and he know it's hurt Calista again. They talk a bit more about her school and about her daily life before he drove her to school.
