Chapter 4: The Struggle in Silence

Kat woke up to the sound of her phone buzzing, the harsh ringtone cutting through the calm of Sam’s mansion. Her head throbbed as she slowly opened her eyes, realizing she was no longer in the car. She was in a spacious, elegant guest room, soft light spilling through the windows, casting a warm glow on the cream-colored walls.

This isn’t a dream, she thought, rubbing her eyes and sitting up. This is real. Sam… Sam took me here.

She froze, remembering the kiss, the way she had touched him in the car. Her face turned red as the embarrassment hit her. What did I do?

Before she could dive deeper into her thoughts, there was a knock at the door.

"Kat?" Sam’s voice was soft, but steady. "I brought you some water. You should drink it."

She opened the door to find Sam standing there, a glass of water in hand, looking every bit the superstar he was—perfectly styled, composed, and almost too good to be true.

"Sam… I—"

"Hey, it's okay. You’re fine," he said, cutting her off with a reassuring smile. "I’m not here to judge you. You needed help, and I helped you. You saved my life once, remember? This is just me returning the favor."

Kat felt a lump form in her throat as she looked at him. She hadn’t expected this from him—compassion and understanding when she least deserved it.

"Thank you," she whispered, taking the water from him.

As he turned to leave, she remembered something.

"Sam," she called out, stopping him. "I don’t want to be a burden. I… I don’t belong in your world."

He paused for a moment, his gaze softening. "We all need someone, Kat. No one is an island."

Kat lowered her head, suddenly feeling like the weight of the world was pressing on her shoulders. She hadn’t worked in weeks. In fact, it had been months since her career had taken a dive. Her last few projects had flopped, and now—thanks to a certain director—her reputation was in shambles.

She couldn’t even get auditions anymore.

Later That Day

Kat’s phone buzzed again, and this time, it was a text from Jack, her manager.

Kat, we need to talk. Call me when you can.

She groaned and called him back immediately. She had a sinking feeling that this wasn’t going to be a pleasant conversation.

"Jack," she greeted him, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Kat, listen," Jack’s voice was tight, and Kat could hear the stress in his tone. "The director you pissed off—he’s talking to everyone in the industry about you. I just got off the phone with your agency—they’re not going to support you anymore. It’s bad, Kat. Really bad."

Her stomach twisted into knots. "What does that mean? Am I—am I blacklisted?"

"It’s not official yet," Jack said, "but it's close. No one is going to hire you if that director keeps spreading rumors. He’s powerful, Kat. You’re not going to be able to get any work, not for a while, at least."

Kat sat in stunned silence. She had been trying to stay positive, but this was the reality. The man who had harassed her for months—trying to take advantage of her—was now spreading lies to ruin her career. And her agency, her lifeline, was abandoning her. She was alone, trapped in an industry that chewed up and spit out actresses like her all the time.

"Jack… I don’t know what to do," she whispered, her voice breaking.

"I’ll try to help," he said, but she could hear the uncertainty in his words. "I’m not sure what can be done. Just hang in there, Kat. I’ll keep fighting for you."

Kat ended the call, staring at the ceiling as tears welled up in her eyes. She had fought so hard to get here, to make a name for herself. And now, it was slipping away.

Sam’s POV

Later that day, Sam found himself thinking about Kat more than he expected. He had always been aware of the harsh realities of the entertainment industry, but seeing the toll it had taken on her was another thing entirely.

He had lived in the bubble of fame for so long, surrounded by yes-men and adoring fans. He had his fair share of scandals and rumors, but nothing that had ever threatened his career in the same way. Seeing Kat, someone who had once been a rising star, now crumbling beneath the weight of a few lies and a director’s vendetta, made him furious.

"Aaron," Sam said, looking over at his best friend, who had been quietly observing from the couch. "We need to do something. I can’t just let her slip away."

Aaron raised an eyebrow. "You’re getting involved with this? You know it could backfire on you, right? She's a third-rate actress, Sam. People will talk."

"I don’t care," Sam said firmly. "She saved my life. Now I’m going to help her, no matter what it takes."

Aaron paused, then gave a small nod. "Alright, if you’re serious about this, we need to move fast. First thing’s first—get her a solid defense. She’ll need legal support, and maybe even some good PR to turn this around."

"I’ll handle it," Sam replied, determination in his eyes. "I owe her."

Back to Kat

Meanwhile, at her apartment, Kat sat in silence, her phone buzzing with constant texts and calls from Lucy, her junior actress who had once looked up to her. emma had been the one to warn Kat about the director’s intentions before everything went wrong.

Kat, are you okay? I heard what happened. Please, let me know you're alright. I’m here for you.

Kat smiled bitterly at the message. She had no idea how much longer she could pretend everything was fine.
