We had been trekking to what I assume is their home for about two hours and still no signs of anyone. Considering the situation, I'm starting to wonder if this trip home could be a multi day situation. If that's the case, it would explain why none of our unmanned expeditions showed any signs of sentient life. It also means I just might still have a chance of escape.
As we approached a river, a few more words were shared, and the group moved to take a break. I was shoved into a sitting position near a large rock as the ground split to complete various tasks. I was finally given a chance to observe my captures again and realized they still had yet to remove my knife from the guys leg.
He was walking in that state for two and a half hours without complaint? Even if he was getting help from his companions, that was completely absurd. I was starting to panic for him when one of the men came up to me with a full of a slimy plant he had pulled from the river. Coming to sit next to me, he pricked he thumb on his spear and smeared his blood on the plant. He then lifted his mask partially and stuck his hurt thumb in his mouth as he pushed the bloody mess of deep green and red toward me.
At my confused state, he prompted me with a short "ge~at" before pushing it towards me again.
In frustration, I hurt and squirmed in my restraints as I quietly but sternly spoke.
"I don't understand."
Somehow, this got a response out of him because he hummed in affirmation before moving closer to me. He then released the restraints before forcing the plant into one of my hands and pointing to his mouth.
Did he want me to eat it? I looked at him once more before pulling my mask down and hood off. I then cautiously sniffed the strange plant.
As I removed my hood and mask, he seemed to stiffen. He then yelled something in a panic to the group. He had effectively stopped me from finally taking the risk and eating what he had provided through his outburst, but I was by far the least shocked.
There was a moment of silence from the ground as they looked over toward us before going into a slight panic as well. When I tried to ask what was wrong, the one next to me just said "ga~it" to me while pointing to his mouth again, only he seemed to say it almost nicely this time.
With no more excuses to refuse, I built op the nerve and ate it, although begrudgingly. At first, the putrid taste and unpleasant texture made me feel like barfing, but then I felt like my head was about to burst. It hurt, and I couldn't help but cry out from the pain.
"What did you do?"
I was getting dizzy. The pain was too much.
"It's alright, little one it will only be a moment it's alright."
I understood him. How could I understand him. My sense blurred as my thoughts swam, what was happening.
The next thing I know, I'm waking up to a chaotic and panicked discussion from the group. Their panic, however, quickly ceased when I spoke, and my exhaustion was washed away when they did.
"What's going on?"
"Ah, you're awake... We were starting to worry most don't react that way to language sharing l."
He sounded sad and confused, though my shock out weighed his. I could understand what he was saying? I stared at him blankly for a moment too long because the panic returned to his voice.
"Do you still not understand us?"
As I slowly registered the question, my mind blanked as I tried to answer.
"What... oh, yes. Yes? I understand?"
There was a moment of silence before he continued.
"Hmm, you must still be dazed. Are you in pain anywhere, I was able to catch you when you fainted, but it's still concerning that it affected you that way."
I was finally adjusting to the situation as I fought of my exhaustion. I was possessing his questions when I was reminded of how they had yet to treat any of the injuries I had caused. I scanned the group until finally making eye contact with my original attaker. he still hadn't treated the injury.
"You idiot, what are you doing? You haven't even taken the knife out of your leg?"
It might not have been a pleasant meeting, but they kept me alive even after hurting them and have shown me too much kindness for me to let him bleed out and potentially lose the leg. I had to help.
Taking off my pack, I rummaged through my stuff until I found my sufficiently stuffed med kit. I left my pack on the ground as I moved over to him with the kit. he was obviously startled by my lecture , but surprisingly calm about my approach.
"What? uh, oh, no worries, kid. I promise we are heading straight back. I'm not stupid enough to continue the hunt like this, and I will be seeing the healer as soon as we get back."
He was smiling at me like my concern was cute but un necessary.
There was no way. No, I was treating this now. I moved closer to him, sitting next to his leg. I took a small cloth and rolled it into a gag, giving it to him before continuing to study the wound.
"Bite down on this. It will help."
He was still confused but obeyed, acting like he was entering a small child.
First, I need to clear the wounded area, I'll cut the cloth around it open so I have better access. Then, I need to clean my hands and remove the knife before I clean his wound thoroughly. I'll need pressure to be applied to stop the bleeding until we make it back. I'll use the Tourniquet and a gauze bandage treatment until we get to his so-called healer.
I had a plan, and now I just need to execute it. I pulled out another knife and watched his calm and minorly amused state faded instantly.
This might not be so easy after all.
