chapter 4

Daniel pov

I've always desired to live life on my own terms. This, however, is not the case for me.

When my father got sick, I took over the company so he could take some time off.

As this company's new CEO, I represent my father and the reputation he established as the CEO of this business. I can not escape or hide from this familial legacy.

I've gotten used to my new surroundings, and everything is going swimmingly. The meetings and work last for endless hours.

"This is crazy,"I muttered one evening as I stood by the window in my office. The city lights stretched endlessly before me, twinkling like stars. For a moment, I smiled—a rare and unexpected smile. Was this God’s way of showing mercy? The thought startled me.

Wait… was I smiling? By myself?

“Oh God,” I groaned inwardly. “Can you stop these intrusive thoughts for just a second?”

A flicker of rebellion sparked within me. Was it so wrong for someone like me to crave a little fun in this otherwise dull existence?

I called my secretary, Sam, and asked for the candidates’ forms for an upcoming interview session.

Sam and I have been good friends since college, and I’m grateful to have him as my secretary.

“Sir,” he said hesitantly, “you’ve always said interviews aren’t your cup of tea.”

“Did I?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Yes,” he replied with a knowing look. “You said it’s an HR job.”

“Well,” I countered smoothly, “set up a camera so I can monitor the interviews remotely. As CEO, it’s my responsibility to ensure we hire the best talent.”

Sam gave me a skeptical glance but nodded. “Understood, sir.”

The interviews began and ended in what felt like the blink of an eye. One candidate stood out—she was sharp, confident, and surprisingly engaging. But when Sam returned with the final results, he informed me that she hadn’t made the cut.

The secretary came into the office and said the candidates were good, but “We only have two positions available,” he explained.

I leaned back in my chair, an idea forming in my mind. “Then let’s create another position,I said she will be my personal assistant.”

Sam frowned. “Sir… you already have a secretary—and that’s me.”

“Relax, Sam,” I said with a grin. “This isn’t about replacing you. She’ll be my personal assistant.”

He crossed his arms and gave me a pointed look. “I’m advising you as a friend: this is a bad idea.”

“Come on! It won’t hurt to have a little fun,” I teased.

“Since when do you hire people for their personality?” he shot back. “And since when do you find girls entertaining?”

“You talk too much for a secretary,” I retorted playfully. “Maybe you need a vacation.”

“I’ll gladly take one,” he quipped. “But you’ll have to train your new assistant yourself.”

“Are you serious?” I laughed. “Look, Sam—I don’t have any ulterior motives here. I’m just… bored.”

He sighed heavily but didn’t argue further. “Fine,” he said at last. “But how are you going to convince her to take this role? And why would she agree to work for someone who already has a secretary?”

I smirked mischievously and leaned forward. “Leave that part to me.”

For the first time in ages, excitement coursed through me—a spark of unpredictability in an otherwise predictable life.
