"Ohh, you must have already forgotten me, little champ. I completely understand, it's been years since the last time we've met." He said in a warm tone, but I still couldn't recall who he was.
"Umm, who are you exactly?" I asked him politely, he seemed to be a good man, but something was odd about him.
"Oh sorry, I'm Akihiro Astor, your grandad's best friend. You and I met when you were still a kid, if I remember correctly, you must have been around three at that time." He spoke, as if the memories were clearly etched on his mind.
Well, what he said might actually be true. Dad and grandpa had a fall-out when I was just a kid. It was right after Nana died. He didn't allow me to see him after their argument, and we never visited since then. I tried to visit him once, but the people said that he wasn't living there any more. So I lost track of him.
"Oh, okay. Come in, it's cold outside." I invited the old man, and led him to the living room.
He wasn't really completely old looking, although his hair was white but his skin was not loose nor was his posture bad.
"So, what brought you here, ummm…" I wasn't sure how to address him.
"You can call me Hiro, or uncle if you like, just like before." He told me while smiling.
He immediately started talking the moment we sat on the couch.
"Elijah, I'm not here to disturb your life. I just want you to know that your grandfather passed away a little over a month ago. His lawyer suddenly came to my house, and he said that your grandfather wants me to personally give this box to you. As for the reason, I don't know. I never heard of him, until two days ago." He said, and I could clearly sense that his voice was laced with sadness.
"Oh..." I desperately tried to lift the mood, but I obviously failed.
"No, it's okay, you don't have to dwell on it. I'm just here to give this box to you, he wanted you to have it."
I wonder where grandad was all these years... I saw the box he was holding, and it wasn't really modern looking. I mean, it looked nice, but the design was quite old.
"Do you have any idea what's inside?" I asked him, as he passed me the box. And I traced my fingers on top of it. I looked at him, but he shook his head, telling me he didn't know. I turned my head down and carefully opened it.
Immediately the date written in an old paper caught my eye.
'January 10, 1961'
"1961" I read the year in a low voice.
I don't know why, but I started to feel uneasy.
I looked inside the box and saw two silver rings.
"Do you perhaps know who owned this?" I asked the old uncle, but he was just staring at the rings in my hand. Out of nowhere, he talked, "Child, they say that memories are much easier to remember when they are old,"
"Excuse me?"
"If you have a chance to remember every detail of your past, would you take it?" he asked me while letting out a deep breath, and slowly closed his eyes.
"Of course, it would be nice, I guess?" I replied to him, and he opened his eyes, and looked at me with a somber smile.
"Even the bad ones?"
