It occurred to Jeongguk one afternoon on a Saturday. He had just finished all of his school works (fortunately, university isn't being a bitch today and only gave him a few) and decided to delete some photos in his phone due to its lack of storage.
As he was swiping continuously and deleting every crappy selca, blurred photo and ugly candid that ever existed in his camera roll (thank god) and was already on the April 2013 mark, Jeongguk stumbled on to a photo of him and Taehyung back when they were still the best of friends.
Taehyung was winking at the camera, sporting a snapback on his head whilst Jeongguk was pouting, also with a snapback on his head, but a red one.
Jeongguk feels a smile making its way on his face, nostalgic. They were only foolish high school boys back then, didn't really had a care in the world since all they cared was their social circle, having fun. Not that serious with his studies because just like what they said back in the day; you only live once.
Jeongguk chuckles to himself, why is he saying it like it was ages ago when it had only been four years since that day? He keeps swiping, from him and Taehyung hanging out, then Jimin comes in to the picture, then Yoongi and Hoseok and then finally the high school sweethearts Seokjin and Namjoon. They were all laughing. Like being with each other was already enough. Ah, he missed those days. Hashtag squad goals.
And Jeongguk thinks back to everything that had happened.
Ever since they graduated, everything has changed. Apparently, Yoongi and Jimin got scouted in a music agency and are now trainees. Set to debut soon. Seokjin got scouted as well in the same agency but is going to debut as a solo artist. Focusing on his vocals more than his dancing because like he said 'he's too pretty to dance', Namjoon wanted to debut as well but seeing that he can make his country proud due to his high intellectual quiz, he chose the latter. He can probably debut right after. And all of them, his family and of course, Seokjin could never be more proud.
Hoseok, Taehyung and him went to university. Hoseok is now teaching at the dance department, while both Taehyung and him are normal college students. Slowly but surely trying to make a future for themselves.
All of them still kept in touch though, and they still hang out, but not that often. And Jeongguk's alright with that. Because he's sure all of them had a bright future ahead of them. And he's glad that's where its heading.
But, with eyebrows slightly furrowed, Jeongguk finds himself zooming on their group picture to only Taehyung and him. Because that's what he missed the most.
Just the two of them hanging out. Even though all of them were close, Jeongguk and Taehyung had their own level of closeness. Maybe because they were childhood friends.
So they often hang out alone. Swinging by the cafe after school, and if Taehyung was in the mood for more fun (everyday) they would stop by the playground and just literally sit on the swings. Then on most times, Jeongguk was the one pushing Taehyung on the swing.
And Taehyung would be flashing that boxy grin of his like he was the happiest kid on earth. (He probably was.) and Jeongguk, Jeongguk could never be happier.
Both of them wanted nothing more, than be with each other. But the surprising thing was, they were just the best of friends. Despite what their whole school said otherwise.
It was just Jeongguk and Taehyung.
But, what changed? Why does he feel like everything right now is different?
Jeongguk's finger hovers over Taehyung's contact on his phone, should he ask? He's probably free right now.
Yeah, he should. This will bother him until the next hour and that's not what he's planning to do. So he clicks the Call button. He patiently waits for Taehyung to pick up, running the question in his head for the nth time until he hears that deep voice that was too familiar.
"Hello?" Jeongguk sighs before replying, "Hi there Tae."
"I just left my last class, what's up?" Jeongguk could hear some people greeting the elder, ah, still the resident friend, okay seriously, what changed? He clears his throat, "Um, I just wanted to ask something."
Taehyung hums in response, "Well I was clearing some storage in my phone, but I found this photo of us back in high school and I felt nostalgic and I thought back to the things that had happened and I was wondering—"
"Yah! Sungjae!" Jeongguk hears someone laughing—that's definitely Sungjae—the phone's now away from Taehyung's ear, but Jeongguk still waits until Taehyung's back on the phone. And no, he's not jealous at all. Yook Sungjae's just a friend, a very straight friend. "Yeah, sorry about that, you were saying?"
"When did we stop being friends?"
Taehyung almost laughs, "What?"
"We were so close back then, and I just wondered when we stopped being that, being friends."
"Are you high, Guk?" Jeongguk would've thrown him a 'what the ****' look if he wasn't doing this on the phone. "Yah."
The elder snickers, "You really wanna know my answer?"
"Yes." Jeongguk responds almost desperately.
"Then open the door, ya lil shit."
Jeongguk's not even surprised anymore, but damn, Taehyung's fast. He gets up from his comfortable seat on the couch, saunters over to the door and swiftly turns the knob.
Taehyung was already standing there, grinning like the cheshire cat. Jeongguk would've called him creepy if he didn't know Taehyung for the past twelve years already.
How could someone hate a person like Taehyung though? Anyone would be lucky to have a Kim Taehyung in their life. With Taehyung, everything's rainbow, unicorns, sugar, spice and everything nice. There's never a dull moment with Taehyung. And Jeongguk's grateful to the heavens above that he was blessed with a Kim Taehyung.
The brown-haired boy enters the dorm quickly, throwing himself on the couch. "Sooo, what's up?" He says, as he looks up at Jeongguk who just closed the door behind him. The younger takes a seat beside Taehyung, the elder automatically leaning his head on Jeongguk's shoulder.
"You already know." Jeongguk swings an arm over the other's shoulder. Taehyung hums, "I forgot, Ask me again."
How could you forget, I literally told you five minutes ago, Jeongguk wanted to say, but was too lazy to do so. "When did we stop being friends?"
Taehyung pulls back from his position, until he was eye-level with him. Staring at Jeongguk with those sincere eyes. And Jeongguk knew Taehyung's going to say something honest as ****.
"When I fell in love with you."
Oh and cheesy as ****. But then all of the memories came rushing back.
Now he remembers. How Taehyung confessed to him right after graduation. How Taehyung admitted that he will be going to the same university as Jeongguk. How Taehyung almost cried there, regretting that he took a long time to confess. How Taehyung apologized that he shouldn't be feeling that way because they're best friends and that he should know the limits of his feelings. How Taehyung finally cried when Jeongguk smiled and told him that he felt the same way ever since they entered high school. How Taehyung finally kissed him on the lips where it mattered the most. And how their friends cheered, shouting "It's about damn time."
And as Taehyung kissed him at the moment, Jeongguk was reminded how much he loved this idiot.
And that, it wasn't just Jeongguk and Taehyung.
It was always Jeongguk and Taehyung. And that's when they stopped being friends to be something more.
