Thorn ran seemingly without end. She ran into the thick dark forest. “If I stop for a single second it will catch up,” she thought. Branches struck her face and her legs as she ran. Her hair was a mess and her clothes were torn to shreds. The thick mud crunched under her feet as the leaves flew around her. She was not running from the police, but was trying to run from the fate that grasped her tightly. Slowly suffocating her as its ghost-like hands wrapped around her. A chill ran up her spine as the cold breeze seemed to push her deeper into the forest.
“I don’t know if you're a spirit, part of my imagination, or what, But i trust you. I will follow your lead wind. Because I trust you.” said Thorn as the wind pushed her along. It seemed to snicker or laugh like a little kid as it pushed her. She continued going but slowed to a quick walk. The wind whirled around her. Her hair blew up and smoothed out as though being brushed. Her cuts stopped bleeding and her energy seemed to come back. It was like magic, swirling around her. It gave her strength and rejuvenation.
She continued to walk and came across a small and quaint cottage. It seemed tattered and old but well maintained. She turned behind her where the wind seemed to stand as a spirit itself.
“Is this where you wanted me to go?” she asked gently. The wind seemed to turn and push her towards the cottage. It pushed lightly, slowly growing stronger to the point of almost pushing her down.
“Okay Okay! I’m going alright?” grumbled Thorn as she stomped on the fresh leaves. She looked to the cottage and slowed her feet. Her steps were gentle and calm. The trees rustled as the wind seemed to walk away to a tree to observe her. She stepped into the clearing around the small cottage. A little squirrel ran off up a tree after noticing her. She smiled quaintly at the furry creature. She was happy about it. It had a home and family. It was safe. It wasn’t alone.
Her quiet steps seemed to echo as she stepped on the freshly fallen leaves. The fall colored leaves glistened from the fresh dew of the morning. They shook lightly and slowly fell to the damp ground like floating feathers. She looked to where the leaf fell and saw a small cluster of mushrooms and a small little mouse. It scuttered away as soon as it noticed her. It squeezed into a little hole under a large root from the tree. That's where she saw it with her family and friends, or so it seemed to her. She smiled and turned away. Her face may have looked happy but her heart was breaking in two. “Good for you” she thought
“good for you”. She had a bitter distasteful smile. A single tear fell from her and hit the ground. It was like a little dancer. Dancing alone, victim to fate, destined to hit the ground and fade into nothingness.
Her smile faded as she thought back to what the officer had told her “your parents died in a car accident”. A shiver ran up her spine. “Your parents are dead” It seemed to echo from her head throughout her body and around her. It was like an iridescent echo. Following her everywhere as she walked. It was final, She was alone. Her arms shook and she was as cold as ice. Her thoughts scattered. She was quite close to the cottage now, but she didn’t notice. All that was on her mind was the fate and reality that chased her.
She was running down an alley. Only a street light far ahead of her. A dark shadow chased her as she ran hoping that if she just got to the light she would be free from the demons that haunted her. Though no matter how fast she ran she couldn’t get closer to the light. If anything, it grew further and further away. No matter how fast she ran. She shook with fear as the wind slowly walked towards her. She didn’t notice though. She was trapped in her nightmare. A black nothingness seemed to consume her vision. She fell limp just as the wind caught her. Her consciousness slowly faded into the abyss that entrapped her.
