Last Morning of the Summer

The last week of summer went by faster than I wanted it to. I've spent my mornings and nights running. My grandmother thinks I have insomnia since I haven't been sleeping much. I'm not sure what's keeping me up at night. Maybe I'm just nervous to start at a new school, or if it's because I'm waiting for the moment that my grandmother can't take my moms issues anymore and kick us out. Grandma Linda says that she wouldn't kick us out, but I have a feeling she won't be able to handle my moms baggage for long.

Tomorrow is my first day at Ravenswood Private Middle School. Although it's gonna be nice not having to stay locked up in my room, just to avoid my mom, I'm not looking forward to being the new girl in a private school. I don't need a repeat of what my life was like before, which basically consisted of me either being alone or getting bullied by everyone around me in school.

I haven't seen that cute boy Alex since that first day I came into town. Which really sucks because, boy, was he cute. I spent the week regretting that I turned down his invitation to go to that party, but it is what it is I guess.

"Ashlynn!" my mom yelled from downstairs. "Get down here now!"

She sounds quite serious so I get up and off my bed, and start walking downstairs. When I get to the bottom floor I see my mom sitting at the kitchen table, surrounded by empty wine bottles.

"What's wrong mom?" I ask hesitantly.

"I need you to go to the store and get me everything on this list," she shoved a piece of paper in my arms. Everything listed on the paper were different brands and types of alcohol. I immediately know that this conversation isn't going to end well.

"Mom, I'm still a minor, you know I can't get you anything on this list," I tried to sound confident, but it only came out as a whisper. Right after I said it, my mom stood, as well as she could being drunk, and started glaring at me.

"I don't care if you're a minor, you are gonna go to the store and get me what I need, or else you're grounded," She slurred.

"Mom, no one is going to let me-" I tried to say, but got cut off when a wine bottle was chucked against the wall right behind my head.

"Jennifer Rose Williams, you need to calm down! You can not send your daughter on an alcohol run and you can not throw wine bottles at her! You need to go to sleep it off or get out of my house! Do you hear me!" My grandmother came running into the kitchen yelling.

"Shut up mother, you always take her side, you love this pathetic excuse for a child more than you love me," my mom said, now balling her eyes out. My grandmother started to softly push me towards the door.

"I'm taking Ashlynn shopping and when we get back you better be sober enough to get off your lazy butt, pull yourself together, and learn to be a good parent," Grandma exclaimed as we both walked out the door and got into my grandmothers black sedan.
