Rain tapped softly against the window panes.
The room was dim, only the little bedside lamp casting a golden glow over the two beds.
.....
Adrian.
His voice, his eyes, that half-smile when he said she reminded him of his mother.
She sighed and closed the book.
From the next bed, Kathy’s voice broke the silence.
“So…” she said, stretching the word like it had a hundred meanings. “How was the cemetery?”
Clara shot her a look. “Peaceful.”
Kathy grinned. “Peaceful? You met him there! The walking definition of temptation!”
“Kathy!” Clara hissed, glancing toward the door.
Kathy just laughed quietly and pulled out a small pink book from under her pillow.
“Fine, if you don’t want to talk about your sin, we can read about someone else’s.”
Clara blinked. “Is that—?”
“Romance novel,” Kathy said proudly. “Found it in the donation box. Probably a mistake.”
Clara shook her head. “You’re unbelievable.”
Kathy grinned wider. “You’ll thank me later. It’s called Love Beneath the Stars. Very educational.”
Kathy was sitting cross-legged on her blanket, holding her precious pink romance novel like it was a holy relic.
Clara sat opposite her, pretending to study — but her eyes kept sliding toward the book.
Kathy grinned. “Oh, you want to know what happens next.”
Clara blushed. “I do not!”
“Sure, Sister Trouble,” Kathy said, flipping the page dramatically.
“Now, listen…”
She cleared her throat and began reading in her most serious, whispery voice:
> “He leaned closer. She could feel his hot breath on her skin…”
Clara gulped, clutching her blanket. “Kathy…”
Kathy grinned wider and kept going:
> “Then he slowly brushed a strand of hair away from her face. Her eyes flickered — their lips so close she could feel his heartbeat in the air…”
Clara whispered, “Stop it…”
> “And then—” Kathy dragged out the moment — “the distance vanished. He captures her lips in a sudden, dominating kiss - a clear reminder of how he took her that night.. The kiss was deep, slow… the kind that made the world disappear.”
Clara clutched at Kathy’s sleeve dramatically. “Oh my God!”
Kathy kept her voice low and dramatic:
> “ *his hands tightening gently around her. He kissed juliet deeper, more urgently, kathy gulped his tongue dancing with hers.. He break the kiss start to kiss his neck..
The touch, the warmth, the tongues—it was so passionate… so—”
“KATHY!” Clara gasped, half horrified, half dying of laughter.
They both froze for one second — then burst out laughing so hard they nearly fell off the bed.
Clara buried her face in her pillow. “You’re the worst!”
Kathy wiped a tear, giggling. “You love it!”
Clara, still laughing, said, “You sound like you were there!”
Kathy smirked. “Maybe I was. Spiritually.”
They both laughed again until their stomachs hurt.
Then came the sound of footsteps outside — firm, slow steps.
They froze instantly.
A knock on the door.
“Girls?” Sister Maria’s voice floated through. “Quiet down, please.”
Clara bit her lip, trying not to laugh. “Yes, Sister!” she managed.
The footsteps faded. Silence returned.
Kathy whispered, “That was close.”
Clara whispered back, “You almost got us exorcised.”
Kathy snorted into her pillow. “Imagine confessing that. ‘Forgive me, Father, I read about tongues.’”
Clara broke into another round of silent laughter, shaking her head. “You’re hopeless.”
Kathy smiled, eyes soft now. “Maybe. But I make you laugh.”
Clara smiled back. “Yeah… you do.”
They both lay back, staring at the ceiling, their laughter fading into the soft sound of rain.
And as the lights dimmed, Clara whispered to herself —
not a prayer, not quite a confession —
but one tiny, dangerous thought that made her heart race again:
> What if real life ever felt like that?
