The silence in Luca’s realm was never truly silent. Beneath the surface, whispers moved like snakes, voices of the damned murmuring things Kai couldn’t understand. He hugged his knees against the cold marble, watching the crimson light pulse through the cracks in the floor like veins under skin.
He hadn’t seen Luca since last night, and that should have been a relief. It wasn’t. The absence itself felt suffocating.
When the door finally opened, the temperature shifted. Luca stepped through, his presence filling the vast chamber effortlessly. He wasn’t wearing his usual dark cloak today—just a loose black shirt, sleeves rolled up, faint golden markings glowing across his skin.
Kai forced himself to look away.
“You’ve been quiet,” Luca said, his tone smooth but edged. “Thinking of escape, perhaps?”
Kai glared. “Would it work if I tried?”
Luca smiled faintly. “You could run until your feet bled, and still, the air would taste of me. This realm bends to my will, little human.”
“Then why keep me here?” Kai demanded. “If you want power, you already have it.”
Luca’s golden eyes softened for a moment—barely. “Power means nothing when eternity grows dull.” He approached slowly, each step echoing. “But you, Kai… you burn bright enough to make hell tremble.”
Kai’s breath caught when Luca stopped inches away. “You’re insane.”
“Perhaps,” Luca murmured, reaching out to brush a strand of hair from Kai’s face. “But what devil isn’t?”
His touch lingered too long. The warmth from his fingertips spread like wildfire through Kai’s veins.
Luca turned away suddenly, his expression unreadable. “Come. You should eat.”
“I’m not hungry,” Kai muttered.
Luca snapped his fingers, and a long table appeared before them, laden with foods that shimmered faintly—dark fruits, blood-red wine, bread steaming with heat. The smell was intoxicating, rich and heavy.
“It’s not poisoned,” Luca said, amused. “I prefer my prey breathing.”
Kai scowled but sat anyway, hunger gnawing at him. He tore a piece of bread, cautious, and took a bite. The flavor was too vivid—sweet and warm, flooding his senses.
Luca watched, leaning against the table. “Humans are so fragile. One touch, one taste, and you’re lost.”
Kai looked up sharply. “You really enjoy this, don’t you? Playing god?”
Luca smiled. “I am not a god, Kai. I am what gods fear to become.”
The words rolled like thunder, and for a moment, Kai saw it—the flicker of wings made of fire, a crown of smoke. Luca wasn’t just powerful. He was ancient.
Kai’s hands trembled around the cup. “What are you planning to do with me?”
Luca’s gaze softened again, dangerously gentle. “I plan to make you remember me. Even when your heart forgets everything else.”
Before Kai could respond, Luca bent down, his breath brushing Kai’s ear. “Eat, little one. You’ll need strength to survive loving a devil.”
A shiver ran down Kai’s spine. He hated the way those words stirred something deep inside him.
Something that whispered—he might already be falling.
