Boris had been listening to everything from behind the door. At first, he thought Abril was just another one of his boss's conquests, disguised with the title of "secretary." But what he heard left him speechless.
"This is wonderful!!" he shouted inside. Finally, someone had arrived who was capable of standing up to that arrogant man whom everyone feared.
He didn't know whether to laugh incredulously or celebrate. The truth is that this young woman had faced him without hesitation, had yelled at him like no one dared.
Abril had become, unintentionally, his winning horse in this clash of egos. Finally, Alfonso Brescia would receive a little of his own medicine: cold words, arrogance, insolence, the same that he handed out to everyone without mercy.
Secretly, Boris moved away from the door and waited. When Abril came out, their eyes met and, for a moment, they shared an accomplice smile.
Afterwards, he accompanied her to human resources to sign the contract and showed her some areas of the company, explaining her new functions.
Abril started her first day with a defiant smile. If the CEO thought she was going to let herself be trampled, he was very wrong. She was not like those people who bowed their heads before the powerful. She was Abril Ganoza Arias, heiress of the second most influential family in the city and the country.
She would only have to endure a few months of "extreme training." She would take it as a life challenge, then she would return to her princess life and, most importantly, she would prove to her father that she was not the airhead that everyone thought she was.
After signing, Boris trained her in her duties: answering calls, scheduling appointments, bringing coffee with all the boss's eccentricities, and fulfilling an endless list of tasks.
Afterwards, he left to take care of matters that only he could solve.
Meanwhile, Alfonso remained in his office, frustrated. He could not accept that a simple girl had insulted him and raised her voice.
"Abril Arias…" he muttered her name, as if savoring it with rage.
He shook his head and called his assistant:
"I want all the information on that woman. Now."
He didn't even let Boris respond with an "okay," he cut the call immediately.
The morning passed between clashes. Alfonso tried to get Abril to treat him with the servile obedience of all his employees, who lowered their gaze and trembled at his mere presence. But she did things her way. Her goal was clear: to get him to fire her.
Later, after complaining about the "most disgusting coffee he had ever tasted in his life," Alfonso ordered her to order lunch from his favorite restaurant, as he would be eating with his friend Carlo.
"And why don't you just fire her?" Carlo asked, incredulous, as he uncorked his whiskey.
Alfonso sighed and replied:
"Because it's a favor I'm doing for my grandmother. I don't know what the hell that spoiled brat did to get her to ask me to give her a job."
At that moment, Abril burst into the office without knocking.
"Haven't you been taught to knock before entering?!" Alfonso shouted, red with fury.
She jumped, showing fear for a second, but immediately changed to annoyance.
"Don't yell at me again. People understand by talking. We are in modern times, not in the Stone Age. Here is your food," she said, leaving the bags on top of the important papers, without caring if she ruined them, and slammed the door as she left.
Carlo burst out laughing.
"Friend, your karma has a first and last name: Abril Arias!"
"Alfonso Brescia's karma has not yet been born," his friend replied, clenching his teeth. "Stop talking nonsense. Let's have lunch."
As evening fell, Abril packed her things with annoyance. Her feet hurt from the trips to the cafeteria and the rounds distributing documents. For someone with secretarial experience it was normal, but for her it was an ordeal. And on top of that with the worst boss in the world, she thought.
She went up to the CEO's exclusive elevator without caring about the murmurs. Since she was little she had lived surrounded by luxuries and servitude, and now that apartment—nice for anyone—seemed like a prison to her.
Without credit cards, without expensive restaurants, with a pantry full of food that she didn't know how to prepare. It was hell.
At the exit, she bumped into a stunning blonde.
"Starving!" the woman shouted. "Watch where you're going! If you ruin what I'm wearing, you couldn't pay for it in your whole miserable life."
It was Paula, a rising model who thought she was queen of the world for being the CEO's "woman."
Abril tried to ignore her and go on her way, but Paula grabbed her wrist tightly, burying her nails in her skin.
"Apologize if you don't want your life to be hell."
The employees who were leaving at that hour began to surround them, whispering.
Abril, with narrowed eyes, remembered the words of her father, the contempt of her boss and the accumulated rage. With contained fury, she raised her hand and slapped Paula with such force that she made her let go.
"Don't ever touch me again in your life, old airhead. And no, I wouldn't pay for those horrible rags, not because I can't, but because I have better taste. Your clothes are cheap replicas and your body is pure plastic." Having said this, she pushed the curious onlookers and made her way out, leaving with her head held high.
Paula was speechless, with her mouth open and her eyes wide. Everyone respected her as "the future Mrs. Brescia," but now she had been humiliated in front of dozens of witnesses.
That night, Abril arrived devastated at her apartment. She opened the door and was greeted by the aroma of freshly made food. When she saw her brother coming down the stairs, she ran to hug him.
"Dereck!"
"My little light, my little angel," he wrapped his strong arms around her. "How was your day?"
She burst into tears. Dereck kissed her head tenderly.
"Okay, don't cry. I bought you your favorite pizza."
They spent the night together, eating and watching a movie. Dereck suffered in silence when he saw his sister's pain, but he was determined to support her.
Meanwhile, Alfonso was dealing with Paula, who was exaggerating the story of the incident.
