📖 The Dragonborn Girl
Chapter 5: The Dark Kingdom
Far from the Ashen Plains, beyond rivers of black stone and skies thick with storm clouds, there stood the Citadel of Shadows—a fortress carved into a mountain’s heart. Its towers pierced the sky like jagged claws, and rivers of molten fire flowed through its halls.
There, upon a throne of obsidian, sat Lord Malakar.
He was draped in blackened armor that gleamed like oil, a crown of scorched iron resting upon his brow. His eyes glowed faintly red, and the chains coiled at his side rattled softly as if alive. Each chain shimmered with runes that pulsed like veins of fire.
Before him knelt the silver-haired mercenary from the Ashen Plains, her head bowed.
“My lord,” she said, her voice tight with shame, “we found her. The dragonborn girl. But… the Phoenix Guard intervened.”
Malakar’s eyes narrowed, the air around him growing heavier.
“You failed me, Captain Seris.”
Seris flinched but did not lift her gaze. “Forgive me. I swear, I will not fail again. She cannot remain hidden for long.”
Malakar rose, his voice deep and cold as thunder.
“She is more than a girl. She is the key to the chains.”
He held out his hand, and one of the glowing chains slithered to him, coiling around his arm like a serpent. “With her blood, the dragons’ flame will bow to me. And when that day comes, the world itself will kneel.”
Meanwhile, Lyra, Kael, and the Phoenix Guard marched across the Ashen Plains toward the city of Aeloria.
Captain Arwen rode at the front, her crimson cloak snapping in the wind. Kael walked beside her, still wary, while Lyra rode behind, clutching the wooden bird the boy from Eryndor had given her.
She couldn’t shake the chill from her dreams. Night after night, the same vision haunted her: Malakar standing in fire, chains binding dragons, his voice whispering her name.
One evening, as they camped, Lyra finally asked,
“Captain Arwen… what did you mean when you said the Temple foretold me?”
Arwen studied her carefully, as though weighing what truth to share. At last, she said,
“Long ago, the Oracle of Flames spoke of a child born of both dragon and man. A child who would rise when the world teetered on the edge of shadow. That child would either save the flame… or let it be consumed.”
Lyra swallowed hard. “And you think that’s me?”
“I do not think, girl,” Arwen said. “I know.”
Kael frowned. “And if Malakar finds out?”
Arwen’s face darkened. “He already knows. The Dominion has spies everywhere. The fact that Seris found you so quickly… it means they are hunting.”
Lyra’s heart pounded. “But why me?”
Arwen glanced at the horizon, where the first stars glimmered. “Because your fire is pure. Dragons’ fire. Malakar cannot wield such flame. But with you… he might twist it. And if he does, the world will burn in chains.”
The words settled like a stone in Lyra’s chest. She stared into the campfire, watching the flames dance, and whispered to herself,
“I will not let him.”
Back in the Citadel of Shadows, Malakar stood at the highest balcony, his eyes fixed on the distant mountains. The chains around him rattled softly, whispering like voices only he could hear.
“She resists,” he murmured. “But the fire within her is young. Untamed. It will break, just as the dragons before her broke.”
He closed his fist, and sparks scattered into the air.
“Bring her to me, Seris. Dead or alive… but her fire will be mine.”
Seris bowed, eyes gleaming with ruthless determination. “Yes, my lord.”
That night, Lyra dreamed again.
But this time, she was not bound. She stood in a cavern filled with light, where a massive dragon slumbered—its scales shimmering like molten gold.
It opened one eye, glowing with ancient wisdom, and its voice rumbled through her mind:
Child of flame… the time is near. The chains must be broken. Or the world will fall.
Lyra gasped awake, sweat on her brow, her chest burning as though her fire itself had spoken.
