Episode 5

The "Boss of bosses," Trini would say, ignores what Julian just said and calls him outside. I don't know why he seems so familiar to me, and I'm not talking about what happened this morning; it's like I've seen him before. His aura is hard to ignore.

Julian doesn't take long to return and sighs, sitting down.

"You're hired, you have a one-week trial period."

"But I'll get paid, right? Because it sounded like you're giving me a free week of trial."

I say it, and he lets out a sincere laugh.

He explains the payments, and I don't know if it's worth it because you can tell his boss is a jerk in a suit.

When we finish, he extends his hand, and I take it. He opens the door for me, and I leave. I walk down the hall, leave the company, and outside, I feel like I'm breathing fresh air. I get in my car and drive back home, not without stopping for pizza to celebrate.

I walk into the house, and my daughter runs towards me when she sees me.

"Look what I brought."

I say it and put everything down to pick her up. I feed her while I tell my aunt everything that happened in the interview.

"The one who interviewed you is a very nice and kind young man, he's a friend of the owner."

"One is sweetness, I've seen him once or twice, and the other is poison... but the bastard is handsome," Trini says, and my aunt glares at her.

"Watch your words."

"One is sweet and the other bitter," Emma says, and we laugh, since she always comments on things that lighten the moment.

After a while, Emma falls asleep, and I take her up to the room. Once I lay her down, my aunt is waiting for me outside, and I know what's coming.

"You have the job, quit the other one."

"They told me I have a one-week trial. Aunt, I don't want to get my hopes up and then they say no, and then what will I do?"

"My salary isn't much, but…"

"I know where this conversation is going, but no, Aunt. You have no responsibility for me. You have your own problems, and mine is my daughter."

She nods, and I know she wants to help me, but she has her own expenses with my cousin.

She goes downstairs, and my cousin follows her, saying goodbye to me.

I pick up the toys and clean the house a little. I take a shower and come out in comfortable clothes. I lie down next to my daughter, whom I hug close as if she were going to escape.

Every time I close my eyes, memories hit me one after another, forcing me to open them.

There hasn't been a moment where I can sleep for hours straight, not since my daughter was born. She can't be without supervision, and I know that even the slightest second can save her in one of those seizures she gets. I will do whatever it takes so that she can have a common life, like any child.

Her operation is very expensive in case the medicine doesn't help her, and for now, I'm calm since she hasn't had a seizure in a long time. That's a good sign, even if I can barely afford to buy her medicine.

When it's time for me to get ready, I hear the door open. I go out and see my aunt and my cousin entering.

They smile at me, and I get ready quickly. I go downstairs, and my aunt leaves a topper with food.

She hugs me, and I accept it since I don't like to fight with her.

"You're a great mother," she tells me, and I nod.

We both look at each other.

My cousin says goodbye to me, and like every day, I go to work peacefully.

I go straight to change, and when I see Nora putting makeup on her face, I know what it means: her boyfriend beat her, she needs more drugs. He only sends her to work when he needs money.

For everyone, it's normal. They announce me, indicating that it's my time to go out.

I go out, go up on the stage where I've danced for almost three years, but I feel how my whole body freezes when I see Julian, the one who interviewed me, sitting at a table. And I get even worse when I see the one who will supposedly be my "boss" arrive tomorrow. He doesn't look anywhere, he just sits down with his bored face.

And most importantly? What is a man like him doing here?
