Chapter 2
In the music room, Taehyung sat on the piano stool while looking at the music score.
This was the music for his solo piano performance at the school’s arts festival one week later. Since starting high school, Taehyung's everyday piano practices have greatly reduced. Because of the recent school transfer and the new environment, he was not able to touch the piano for almost a month. The music that he had previously been able to play with both eyes closed now felt unfamiliar.
Taehyung reviewed the score again. Laying the book flat on the music stand, he prepared to play the piano.
At this time, a pleasantly deep voice flew to his ears,
??
Our school’s Fourth Culture and Arts Festival begins today. Culture forges our school’s spirit, arts...
Taehyung couldn’t resist glancing at where the voice came from.
In the front of the music room, a male and a female student stood on a platform. The female student was called Hwang Yeji, the neighboring class’ class president. Beautiful, gentle, and eloquent, she was chosen to become the arts festival’s female presenter. Standing next to her was the male presenter, Taehyung's archnemesis, Jungkook.
No, to be clear, Taehyung one-sidedly decided to make Jungkook his archnemesis.
Jungkook himself seemed to not know about this......
Taehyung secretly stared at Jungkook.
He wondered what Jungkook, that second-year high school student, ate in order to grow to 184cm tall. Yet unlike the usual lanky bamboo pole-like physique, Jungkook's body was well proportioned with decent amount of muscles. With his pleasingly handsome face, and due to his physique looking extremely dazzling while wearing the school uniform, he was publicly known as the most attractive boy in school.
Kim Taehyung
"You can still grow more at 17 years old. Some people grow earlier while some people are late bloomers. Wait until we’re 20 years old and let’s see who’s taller!"
178cm Taehyung thought angrily as he absent-mindedly started to play the piano score in front of him.
Taehyung transferred to the boarding school a month ago, during the start of his second year. This came about because his father was sent to work at the company’s branch in Europe, leaving Taehyung without anybody taking care of him. His mother wanted to stay at the old house. The teachers and the quality of education in that city clearly could not compare to the ones in Taehyung's current school. As a result, Father Kim put his foot down, determined to send off the pampered-since-childhood-young-master Kim Taehyung to the boarding school.
Jeon Jungkook– the overall-pretty-good guy – had a handsome face, was good at sports, was multi-talented, and had a rich family. If not for his personality that was rather cold to strangers, you can say that he was perfect.
The thing that made Taehyung most bitter was the 4x400m relay race that he participated in. He carelessly fell down while running. Although he immediately got up and tried his best to run while enduring the pain, he was still surpassed by some people. However, when he passed the baton to Jungkook, Jungkook unexpectedly caught up to three people in one breath.
Nobody blamed Taehyung after the race was over. Two enthusiastic girls even approached him for the first time, giving him water and medicine and helping him treat his wounds. But seeing everyone treat Jungkook like a hero made Taehyung feel like he was compared to and found lacking.......
Kim Taehyung
"Since elementary school, the person who was always the most popular in school sports competitions was me, ah!"
——In short, he felt all kinds of annoyed.
Taehyung bit his lips, absent-mindedly playing the piano and making a mistake.
The bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Taehyung anxiously stopped playing the piano.
This was the afternoon’s last self-study class. To prepare for the arts festival, the teachers gave lots of support to the two presenters and to Taehyung, who needed to practice the piano. Every afternoon during the last self-study class, they came to the music room to practice. Taehyung played the piano while Jungkook and Hwang Yeji practiced the actors’ lines, neither party bothering one another.
As the piano melody stopped, Hwang Yeji's clear and charming voice could be heard,
Hwang Yeji
Jungkook, are you going to go to the canteen?
Jungkook's tone was indifferent,
Jeon Jungkook
I will go later.
Taehyung didn’t think that Jungkook really wanted to go later. It must be because he just didn’t want to go together with Hwang Yeji. According to his observation, Jungkook seemed to be completely immune to beautiful girls.
——When Taehyung was barely transferred to the school for a week, he was relaxing near the doorway when a beautiful girl from another class suddenly ran towards him and shyly gave him a lovely-looking envelope. Taehyung was ecstatic; he thought that as a result of his endless charm, somebody already wrote a love letter to him despite only transferring in several days ago. He felt very proud of himself and smiled, asking a question that he already knew the answer for,
Kim Taehyung
Who is this for?
The other girl spoke with a red face,
Random Girl
I’m sorry to trouble you, but please give this to Jungkook. Thank you.
Taehyung who waited for the girl to answer with “you”,
At his previous school, Taehyung was also at the level of “most handsome boy at school”. He was not tall, and he was quite slim, but he was very handsome. With his delicate facial features, he could simply be described as “beautiful”. When he was little, he was always mistaken as a little girl. Beautiful young boys like him were usually considered very popular at school. But compared to Jungkook, the handsome and masculine Adonis, Taehyung really was a bit lacking. At least for boyfriend material, girls still prefer Jungkook's type a lot more.
Taehyung was full of anger. Grabbing the letter, he returned to the class and threw it at Jungkook. He then went back to his seat. Both people’s seats were only separated by an aisle, so Taehyung clearly saw Jungkook's indifferent look while casually throwing the love letter on his desk.
Taehyung couldn’t hold it in anymore, and he was not done dealing with him, blurting out,
Kim Taehyung
Are you just going to put it there?
Jungkook glanced at him, asking,
Jeon Jungkook
Should I throw it on the floor?
Kim Taehyung
No, what I meant is you didn’t look at it all?
Jungkook raised his eyebrows, looking at Taehyung's face and asking,
Jeon Jungkook
The one from the girl?
Taehyung's thought was that this was bullshit, but his lips were saying,
Kim Taehyung
Right, the very pretty one.
At that time, Taehyung didn’t think anything of it. But afterwards it somehow felt weird when he thought about it again. However, his relationship with Jungkook had been gradually getting worse, to the point of not speaking with each other. Asking about this kind of thing is out of question, so Taehyung could only keep his doubts to himself.
In the music room, the rejected Hwang Yeji felt a little unsatisfied. She remained in the classroom, asking a question in Taehyung's direction,
Hwang Yeji
That’s right, did you guys hear the story about this music room?
Jungkook coldly kept his head down, turning the script’s page and not making a sound.
The atmosphere was a little awkward. Taehyung quickly responded,
Hwang Yeji
It is said that a person died in this music room. At night, if you stay here, maybe you can see something you shouldn’t see.
Taehyung wanted to contribute to the conversation, but Jungkook laughed, head still looking down at his book, and said,
Jeon Jungkook
Since ancient times, there are 110 billion people who have died on earth, people have died pretty much everywhere.
Taehyung turned his head. Facing away from Jungkook, he gave Jungkook a huge eye roll.
Kim Taehyung
"Will it kill you to not act like a pretentious prick?"
Hwang Yeji went to the canteen. Jungkook leaned on the bottom of the podium, head in the script. Taehyung started to play the piano.
Halfway through playing the music, Jungkook suddenly threw the script on top of the podium. Without saying a word to Taehyung, he turned his head and left the room with both hands in his pockets.
That’s right, Jungkook also somehow didn’t like Taehyung.
There were two main reasons for this.
First, because Jungkook's personality was rather independent, he didn’t like to mix with people. In addition, his father donated money to the school, so the teachers heavily favored him, continuously letting Jungkook live in the dorm without a roommate. However, after Taehyung transferred, the school didn’t have excess beds. They could only put Taehyung in Jungkook's room, disturbing Jungkook's one-man world.
This was actually not the main reason as Jungkook was not a narrow-minded person. At the start he also thought to get along peacefully with Taehyung, but Taehyung, whose limelight had been snatched and was feeling like it was unfair, usually acted negatively towards Jungkook. Jungkook was also not stupid. Although he did not know the exact reason, he could figure out that the boy was full of hostility towards him. As a result, he gradually ignored Taehyung. Although the two were in the same grade and lived in the same dorm room, they were not on speaking terms, mutually treating the other as if he didn’t exist.
Once Jungkook left the music room, Taehyung stopped playing.
He tidied up the music book and put it inside the piano stool before hurriedly leaving the music room, acting as if somebody was chasing him from behind.
Talking about this is quite embarrassing as Taehyung didn’t think of himself as a coward. Many people were afraid of bugs, snakes, or mice; Taehyung wasn’t afraid of any of those. When he was a kid, he grew up in a village and was immune to those small things. However, he had one Achilles’ heel: he was afraid of ghosts. Just now, Hwang Yeji rambled about a story that was half-true and half-false, but Taehyung didn’t dare to stay in the music class alone.
When Taehyung was small, he was raised in the village by his grandfather. His grandfather’s profession, if seen through modern lens, can definitely be characterized as a fraudster. The years living with him were bizarre, but he could not see what real skills his grandfather had. At that time, his grandfather’s favorite hobby was to tell Taehyung ghost stories. The stories were incredibly realistic, and the young Taehyung was full of curiosity. Although he was extremely afraid of ghosts, he always forced himself to listen to these stories. When he was growing up, he became even more afraid of ghosts and until now still did not change.
