Episode 5

The sound of her cell phone jolted her awake; she had spent the night sleeping on the floor of the small bathroom in her room. Her fear of him entering had been so great that she chose to lock herself in there and sleep on the floor.

"Hello," she said, half asleep.

"Hello Sophia, this is Marcos, the social worker. I wanted to know if you had received your check for this month yet?" the man on the other end asked.

"Lauren probably received it, otherwise she would have told me," she replied.

"But has she given you what you should be saving in the fund for university?" he questioned.

"She never gives me any of that money. I've been working for two years to cover my expenses," she confessed. She knew that this would unleash hell, but she didn't care about anything anymore.

"Okay, I'll take care of that," he said and then hung up.

She looked at her cell phone screen and noticed she had several messages from Evelyn. She remembered that she hadn't called her as she had promised, but it was still too early to do so, so she just replied, explaining what had happened. She didn't hide anything from her friend.

She left the bathroom to leave her cell phone charging and then went back in to take a bath and get ready for school. The reflection that the mirror gave back to her filled her with pity. Dark circles covered a large part of her eyes and it was obvious that she hadn't slept all night, although luckily, she had taken advantage of the time to do the chemistry assignment that was due today.

Although the day was hot, she chose to wear a long-sleeved shirt to hide the bruise where Darrel had grabbed her, which was already forming. It was like Evelyn had said, "One day he's going to kill you." She knew that she had physical education today, so she opted for a clean pair of exercise pants. She remembered that she had to do laundry or else she wouldn't have anything to wear in the next few days, and she couldn't spend money on new clothes.

The honking of Kat's car let her know that she had to quickly go down the stairs and leave that place before both adults got annoyed by the noise. She sneaked out of her room. Lauren was probably asleep, since she had worked at night, and if she was lucky, Darrel would be on the couch drunk, and yes, that's how she found him.

"Good morning, it looks like you slept pretty badly," Kat said as soon as she got in the car.

"Yeah, I had trouble sleeping last night. I guess because of the change of place, it's still hard for me to adapt," she lied.

"You must rest anyway. If you ever want to miss school, let me know and I'll make up an excuse. Although now that I think about it, I haven't given you my number," she said, laughing as she drove.

"Tell me and I'll write it down," she said, taking her cell phone out of her backpack.

"Oh, those are super resistant. I had one of those," she said, seeing the model she had.

"Yes, I like this one a lot," she lied again. The reality was that she had bought a good cell phone when she was 16, but a month later Lauren lost her job and sold it to buy Darrel beer. She preferred not to buy anything, and Evelyn, so that she would be connected with her, had given her that one, which in her mother's eyes was worthless.

Once she wrote down the number, she made a call so that Kat would have her number registered. They continued talking on the way to school, and when they arrived, they each entered their classes. Again, Sophia had to go to the lab with the twins.

"Good morning, kitty, I hope you did the assignment," Dante said as she approached the table.

"Good morning, yes I did," she replied, crestfallen, which did not go unnoticed by them.

"Did you sleep badly?" Caleb's serious voice took her by surprise. For a moment they were both treating her badly and then they were worried, they were surely bipolar.

But before she could say anything, the teacher entered the classroom and started the class.

"I hope you brought the assignments," he said, going from table to table to collect them.

Sophia took the completed assignment out of her backpack and handed it to the teacher, who was surprised because he hadn't seen the twins work in a long time, although they always got very good grades on the exams.

The class was boring enough, and if it weren't because she wasn't one of those who fell asleep at school, she would have surely taken a good nap there. It was only when it was about to end that she felt as if someone or something was sniffing the air. She wanted to turn to look at the twins, but she was ashamed to do so, and for a moment she thought that maybe the smell of her shampoo was not to their liking.

The bell rang and all the senior students went to the basketball and volleyball courts for physical education class. Something that always happened to Sophia was that the ball hit her squarely in the face or on the head. She was so bad at sports that she never understood how she always passed at the end of the school year.

"I hate sports," she told Kat as she approached her from behind.

"Yes, same here, but it's a compulsory subject," she said, laughing. "What have you chosen?"

"Well, of the two options there were, I'll stick with volleyball, although I'll probably end up in the infirmary," she looked at Kat with a smile.

"Why do you say that?" she asked, curious.

"Because I always get hit with the ball," they both laughed at the joke, which frankly wasn't a joke.

Once the teams were formed, they started playing. In the place there were 3 basketball courts and 3 volleyball courts. Although the games were mixed, for the most part the women chose the second and the men the first. Luckily, Sophia was on the same team with Kat, although that didn't prevent a ball from hitting her hard and knocking her to the floor.

"Kity, the idea is to play, not kill your teammates," the teacher's voice cut off all the laughter that had been heard up until that moment.

"It's not my fault if the weirdo doesn't know how to play or at least dodge the ball," she replied, shrugging.

The teacher helped Sophia up and asked Kat to take her to the infirmary to put ice on her head. The nurse determined that the blow had been quite strong and told her that she preferred that she stay the rest of the day resting in bed.

"If you want, I can let Henry know that you won't be going to work," Kat said before returning to class.

"It's okay, I'll sleep a little and wake up fine," she replied with a smile.

"Okay, rest, I'll ask for the language homework for you," she kissed her on the forehead and left the place.

At least she could sleep what she hadn't slept at night, maybe that blow hadn't been so bad after all.
