After I passed away, my husband began to treat my twin sister as if she were me.

Chapter 5

Days slipped by like sand through my fingers. William was stubbornly clinging to our marriage, refusing to sign the divorce papers. With a defiant grin, he told Hannah, "Dream on if you think I’ll divorce you!" Confusion swirled inside me like a storm.

Hadn’t he been itching to break free ever since Eleanor returned? During our heated arguments, he’d shout at me for being unreasonable, doing everything in his power to end things. Back then, when I stood my ground, his face would flush with anger. But now, with Hannah offering to take my side, he suddenly changed his tune.

Frustrated and determined, Hannah marched over to him, armed with the divorce papers and a feast of seven delicious dishes—his absolute favorites. She set them down on his desk at work, the delightful aroma wafting through the air, painting a picture of warmth and comfort.

"You must be starving! Come wash your hands and eat!" Hannah greeted him, her smile radiant. But William frowned, misinterpreting her gesture as a desperate ploy to win him back.

With a hint of smugness, he said, "Hazel, I knew your indifferent act was just that—an act. You love me too much to let me go to Eleanor."

He thought he had me all figured out, believing Hannah’s previous indifference was just a facade. He lounged at the table, fiddling with his watch, but then something shifted. Hannah pulled out the divorce papers and slid them across the table.

His frown deepened, confusion etched on his face. "What are you trying to do? Getting a divorce so you can be with Eleanor? Everyone wins."

"You think those papers are a joke, William? You want to divorce me?!" His voice rose, disbelief dripping from every word.

But Hannah remained calm and steady. "Yeah, I just want the money, nothing else. You love Eleanor anyway, don’t you? You shouldn’t mind divorcing me that much. Sign these papers, and you’re free to marry her. Isn’t that what you've always wanted?"

It was the truth. For years, William had called out Eleanor's name during our most intimate moments. If she hadn’t gone abroad, he would have never married me out of spite, pretending to be devoted. Like a fool, I gave everything to this marriage, sacrificing my dignity along the way.

When he developed stomach issues, I quit my job to take care of him, learning to cook three meals a day. I transformed our home into a purple paradise, even changing my wardrobe to match his favorite shade. Yet, no matter what I did, I could never compete with Eleanor.

William let out a cold laugh, his eyes gleaming with mockery. "Hazel, weren’t you the one who always refused to divorce me? What changed?"

Hannah met his gaze head-on. "You’re right. I didn’t want a divorce before. But now, I see things differently. I’m done with this love drama! I want to live life on my own terms!"

He muttered something about my sanity, convinced I’d regret my decision. "Fine, let’s get divorced! But don’t come crying back to me later!"

"Don’t worry. I won’t regret this," I replied confidently as he signed the papers. He tossed the pen aside and stormed out of the office, leaving behind the untouched lunch that had been meant to bridge our divide.
