Alara doesn’t speak.
She stands frozen in the doorway, wide eyes bouncing between me and Azaan, lips parted like she walked in on a betrayal she never imagined.
Her voice is a whisper. “You kissed him.”
I don’t flinch. “You saw.”
“You said you didn’t even like him.” Her voice trembles. “You said he was part of the plan.”
“He is.”
“Then what was that?” she snaps.
Azaan opens his mouth, but I raise a hand. “That,” I say smoothly, “was a mistake.”
A lie.
A delicious, aching lie.
Alara’s face crumples. “I loved him.”
Past tense.
I narrow my eyes. “Do you?”
She hesitates.
I step closer. “Because the way you ran in here like a jealous lover… it felt very present tense.”
Her slap is fast.
Not across my cheek—across my heart.
But I don’t let it show.
Azaan steps forward, “Alara, I didn’t mean to—”
“To what?” she bites. “Kiss her back? Hold her like she’s the only girl who matters?”
His silence is answer enough.
She turns to me again. “Why would you do this to me?”
I shrug. “Because he kissed me first.”
She stares at Azaan. “Is that true?”
He doesn’t deny it.
Her eyes shine, not with tears—rage. “You can both go to hell.”
She storms out, and the door slams behind her like thunder.
Silence follows, heavy and raw.
Then I exhale. “That was messy.”
Azaan turns to me. “You planned this.”
My lips curl. “Did I?”
His jaw clenches. “You used me.”
“And you let me.”
He grabs my wrist. Not rough. Not gentle.
“Was it all fake?” he asks, searching my eyes.
“No.”
My voice is quiet. Real.
“That kiss…” I step toward him, breath brushing his lips, “was the only real thing in this cursed palace.”
Then I kiss him again.
This time, I don’t hold back.
His hands bury in my hair, mine slide under his coat. His body presses into mine like he’s starved for it. It’s fire — wild, greedy, desperate. He kisses like he’s drowning and I’m air. Like he wants to forget everything but my name.
My back hits the mirror.
It cracks behind me, but I don’t care.
We’re heat and darkness, lips crashing like waves on stone. Every part of me wants to lose control — to fall into him and never come back.
But I don’t.
Because I’m not a girl who gets to fall.
I break the kiss with a gasp, chest heaving. My hands push him back — slowly, gently.
He blinks, dazed. “Zainab…”
I lick my lips. “You taste like a mistake I want to repeat.”
He reaches for me again, but I slip out of his grasp.
“Not yet,” I whisper. “We’re not done playing.”
Azaan stares at me, eyes wild. “You’re going to ruin me.”
“I already have.”
I leave him standing there — breathless, tempted, ruined.
Outside the door, I pause. My heart is still racing. Not from guilt.
From power.
But deep inside, something flickers.
Guilt’s ghost.
Because I saw the look in Alara’s eyes before she left. Not just betrayal.
Something sharper.
Something darker.
And I wonder — just for a second — if I’ve created a new villain.
Not in me.
