Chapter 4

The departure was quiet.
There were no horns, no music, no banners fluttering in the wind. Only the shuffle of guards, the creak of wheels, and the silent weight of goodbye.
Taehyung stood at the edge of the courtyard dressed in ceremonial white, a hood pulled gently over his crown of chestnut curls. Around him, nobles stood with forced smiles and heavy eyes. His father did not come. The council said he was too burdened with affairs of the pack.
But Taehyung knew the truth.
His son’s sacrifice was already sealed. What was there left to say?
Namjoon was the only one who stepped forward. He placed a soft hand over Taehyung’s heart and murmured.
Kim Namjoon (Alpha)
Kim Namjoon (Alpha)
If ever you wish to come home, say the word.
Kim Namjoon (Alpha)
Kim Namjoon (Alpha)
I’ll come for you.
Taehyung blinked back the tears that burned at the edges of his vision and nodded, fingers squeezing Namjoon’s once before pulling away.
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
Take care of Jin-hyung.
he whispered.
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
He worries too much.
Namjoon smiled faintly.
Kim Namjoon (Alpha)
Kim Namjoon (Alpha)
So do you.

The carriage ride through Blue Moon territory was calm, the forests alive with birdsong and golden light. But the closer they drew to Blackthorn borders, the more the world seemed to change.
Green faded to grey. The trees thinned, twisted into shapes that looked like they had once screamed. The wind grew colder, sharper.
And the moon—goddess above—she seemed to hide herself behind clouds.
Taehyung pulled his robe tighter as he peered through the window. Even the horses slowed, as if sensing what lay ahead.
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
Is this… cursed?
He asked the guard beside him quietly.
The young beta avoided his eyes.
Guard
Guard
We don’t speak it aloud, my prince.
He didn’t press.
It wasn’t until dusk that they crossed the ancient arch of stone marking the entry to Blackthorn land. The moment the carriage passed beneath it, Taehyung felt it—like a pressure behind his eyes, a chill at the base of his spine.
You are not welcome here, the earth seemed to whisper.
It was then he smelled it for the first time—distant, faint, but distinct.
Sandalwood. Smoke. Iron. Cold rain.
It wasn’t the scent of the forest. It wasn’t the carriage, or the guards. It was him.
Somewhere out there, Jeon Jungkook stood beneath the same moon, his scent clinging to the wind like a warning.
Taehyung closed his eyes and let it settle over him.
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
Kim Taehyung (Omega)
So this is the man I am to marry.
He whispered to himself.
Not long after, the carriage stopped at the gates of Blackthorn Fortress.
The guards did not smile. There were no servants waiting with warm hands or kind words. Only cold stares. Scarred faces. Wolves trained for war.
As Taehyung stepped down from the carriage, the world felt heavier. His robes dragged along ash-stained stones. The air tasted of magic long forgotten.
And then—he felt it.
A presence.
He turned sharply toward the steps that led into the fortress—and there he stood.
Jeon Jungkook.
Cloaked in black, body still like a shadow that had grown solid. His arms were bare, muscles taut, veins coiled beneath ink and scar. His hair was raven-dark, loose around his face, and his eyes—
Cold. Calculating. Unreadable.
Not a word was spoken. Not at first.
Taehyung lifted his chin, gaze calm, heart a drumbeat of defiance.
Jungkook’s eyes swept over him once—slow, assessing. He said nothing. Just stepped aside, gesturing silently for Taehyung to follow.
And without hesitation, Taehyung walked forward.
He passed him.
And as he did, their shoulders nearly brushed.
The scent was stronger now. More intoxicating. More dangerous.
Taehyung didn’t flinch. But inside, something curled in his chest—a spark. Faint. Distant.
This is him, he thought. The cursed alpha. The one they all warned me about.
But all he felt in that moment wasn’t fear. It was curiosity.
Jungkook watched him disappear inside. Still silent. Still expressionless.
But behind his calm, something strange happened.
His heart skipped.
Once.
Just once.
