The Duke was going through papers at his desk. His assistant, Quinn Ferguson was arranging the needed documents for him. The Duke was preparing to travel to the Owen mines in the South, which he had told the Emperor when he met him.
The papers were full of names; officials who had partnered with Count Owen in committing their atrocities. The Duke has planned to deal with them as fast as he could, while also claiming a new possession of a mine that had a lot of resources in it.
As they had investigated, Count Owen wanted to cut down on the expenses of paying labourers, and instead used children; some paid, and the others were not being paid, with the excuse of being their parents payment to the Count.
The Duke frowned as he read more from the newest information he had gotten today.
Quinn finally spoke, ‘Your Grace, another letter arrived from the Owen household today.’
The Duke said nothing. Quinn’s expression showed that he expected it. He still continued. ‘They did say they’d give anything and do anything to reclaim their position. All you need to do is ask. That’s what the letter said.’
The Duke paused. He looked like he was in deep thought. After a few seconds of silence but for the sound of papers rustling, he spoke. ‘We don’t have to get what we want the hard way then,’ the Duke looked up. ‘Send a letter to them to come to the Dukedom tomorrow, I’ll give them time for an audience.’
‘Yes, your Grace,’ Quinn said with bow. ‘And,’ The Duke handed a document to him. ‘Send this to the palace,’ he was emotionless ‘It’s something the Emperor must see,’
With that Quinn stepped out. The Duke looked upwards, closed his eyes and sighed. So boring. ‘There’s nothing exciting in the capital,’ he muttered.
Knock. Knock
He raised his head. ‘Who’s there?’
‘Your Grace, it’s Amon.’
‘Come in.’
‘Ah, my lord, I have just come to inform you that dinner has been served.’ Butler Amon said through the closed door. ‘Would you like to take your dinner in there or at the dining hall?’
‘I’ll take it later.’
Butler Amon entered. ‘Your Grace, I appreciate your hard work, however you are not allowed to neglect your meals.’ He said with a stern face. Looking towards the door, he called out, ‘Lisa! Bring in his dinner!’
A brown haired maid with purple eyes scurried into the study carrying a tray, she dropped it on the desk, quickly bowed and took off.
The Duke took a glance at Amon, he looked like he had accomplished something huge. He sighed, this man had taken care of him from birth till now, he definitely can’t refuse him.
The Duke slowly ate as Butler Amon stood at the door of study, his hands behind him.
‘Amon, I’ll be leaving the capital to the south in two days.’
‘My lord, I take it that I won’t be coming with you?’
‘Yeah.’
‘I will make sure to prepare everything then.’ I have to make sure Quinn keeps an eye on him. Butler Amon’s eyebrows turned into a frown, not very obvious behind his thick silver glasses.
‘I’m not going with Quinn.’
WHAAAAAAAAATTT!!
‘What is this trip for exactly?’ Amon asked, obviously thinking of a way to keep an eye on him.
‘It’s confidential.’
Ugh. Amon just nodded as the Duke responded. ’I will inform the maids then. I shall take my leave now, your Grace.’ He walked forward, took the tray of the Duke’s food, bowed and opened the door to go out of the study.
‘Wait,’ the Butler turned.
‘I have an audience with the Owen family tomorrow, please prepare well for them.’
‘Er...I...I thought you declined the marriage offer?’ The Butler handed the tray to the maid who was standing outside.
‘I did.’
‘Then why are they visiting?’
‘You’ll see.’
Amon adjusted his glasses, feeling bad for the Owen family. That phrase was only said when something was bound to happen.
‘I will take my leave now, your Grace.’ He bowed quickly and disappeared.
