Episode 5

A New Beginning

I looked in the rearview mirror as I drove further and further away from my parents' house. I was sad, but I knew it was for the best. I was sure that my parents would give up everything, even their position as beta, for me, and I wasn't willing to let that happen. I didn't want to ruin their lives any further. I just hoped they would forgive me when they realized I wasn't there and that my brother wouldn't blame himself for my decision.

I had reached the border, it was right in front of me, and there, a group of wolves standing guard. They all knew my car and knew it was me, so they didn't stop me, or maybe they didn't want to because of what had just happened.

Being outside the territory without my Alpha's permission, I felt a tightness in my chest. I had barely left and I already missed the pack, but the further I got away, a feeling of relief came over me. I felt lighter, freer.

The kilometers passed, until I reached a city. Once there, the first thing I did was go to a bank and withdraw all my savings. It wasn't much, but it was certainly a very good amount. My parents, being betas, had a good economy, and it was reflected in the money of our allowance. Also, for helping my mother in the pack, she always gave me an extra. There were also my birthday gifts; my uncles had always given me money every birthday, and all of that was saved. This money would certainly be enough for a new beginning.

The next stop was a dealership; I needed to sell my car. I didn't want to be located, so here our journey ended.

"Goodbye little car, thank you for bringing me here" After selling and saying goodbye, I left there with a couple of suitcases and more money. My next stop would be a bus station.

I had been driving for hours, not to mention that I hadn't been able to sleep and had been crying; it was normal to feel tired. When I arrived at the station, I simply asked for a ticket to the most remote city, and that's what I got. I got on the bus and sat in the last seat. I had bought both seats, so I could put my feet up and curl up. It wasn't long before my tears started to fall like a waterfall again, until I fell into a deep sleep.

Hours passed, and when I woke up, I saw that it was already night. I didn't feel like getting up, but the moonlight that filtered through the window was beautiful. The next day, I arrived in another city; in that place, the bus made a stop and then continued for another day. I decided to get off and continue on my own.

I took down my suitcases and left the place; my next stop would be a dealership. A couple of hours later, I had found just what I wanted. The car wasn't new; rather, its glory years had passed, but it was in perfect condition and was just what I needed. Without thinking about it too much, the car was mine. I loaded my suitcases and continued the journey alone.

Days and nights passed; sometimes I found a place to park and sleep, other times I found a roadside hotel and asked for a room. In short, my days were something new every day, but boring.

Suddenly, a goal had come to my mind, Oregon, on the border with Nevada. I had read that in that state there was only one pack, which was good. I didn't feel like dealing with new people, judging me for not having a wolf.

I would look for a human city, preferably a remote town. I didn't have a wolf; therefore, I didn't have the need to transform or be in company, so my plan was perfect. Also, being in a human town reduced the probability of running into a wolf from any pack. Integrating into society wouldn't be complicated.

The complicated thing was finding a place to live and a job. Although I had money, it wouldn't last for my whole life; I needed to generate income.

The stabbing pain in my chest didn't disappear, but it was more bearable when I was distracted, so finding a job had a double purpose.

From today on, I would become a lone wolf, but never a rogue. Both definitions could be confused, but they were totally different. A lone wolf was precisely that: a wolf that, for some reason, decided to leave the pack, while a rogue wolf is a wolf that was expelled from a pack for some crime that is normally serious. Also, a lone wolf cannot be killed for no reason; they are just as protected as any other wolf in a pack, while a rogue can simply be killed and there are no consequences. Rogue wolves normally adopt their wild nature and can be dangerous to anyone, in case they want to attack you. That's why there are no consequences for the attack and murder of a rogue.

Two days later, I had found the perfect place. The small town looked like one out of a magazine. Most of the houses were colorful and two stories high, and in the center of the place, the small shops were one story and cozy. The view was also beautiful, as we were surrounded by large mountains, where the reflection of the sun shone in the morning and the same happened in the afternoon.

I wandered through the streets, looking for something, when suddenly my eyes lit up when I saw a small ad: "Help Wanted."

It was a small restaurant, just what I needed.

"Welcome, miss, can I offer you something?" asks a lady as I approach the counter.

"Good afternoon, I wanted information about the ad outside" I asked.

"Well, are you over 18 years old?"

"Yes"

"Have you run away from home?"

"No!" I lied.

"Did you finish high school?" she asked. I didn't understand why so many questions.

"No, ma'am, but I don't have much left to finish it; it's just that my family..." my throat tightened a little when I remembered my parents and my brother, so I couldn't continue.

"I'm sorry, my dear" said the lady. It seemed she had misunderstood, but I didn't correct her anyway.

"I'll give you a month's trial, after that time, I'll tell you whether to hire you or not, but something that is not up for discussion is that you finish studying. There's a night high school nearby; I want you to go and get your certificate" said the woman, and my eyes widened at her demand.

"Thank you, ma'am, I promise I'll work very hard and study" I said. I never thought I'd find warmth in someone unknown and so far away from my pack.

"Do you have a place to stay?" she asked.

"Not yet, for now I'll go to some nearby hotel, then I'll look for something permanent."

"No way, come on, let's go, I'll take you to my sister's; she has a small place, which I'm sure is perfect for you."

The lady dragged me with her not far away, where another lady, very similar to her, gave me accommodation in a room above her bakery. It was small, but just right for me.

"Are you ready?" she asked.

"Ready for what?" I asked. What a stupid question; it was obvious it was to work.

"High season is coming, and there will be a lot to do" replied Dona Ceci.
