Moonlit Confessions

The day after the event, Jennie couldn’t shake the weight of the conversation she’d had with Vanessa. Every word replayed in her mind, echoing with confusion and hurt. It felt like a betrayal so deep she couldn’t even wrap her mind around it.

Vanessa’s accusations had stung more than Jennie could have anticipated. "It's not my problem. You should've told me," Vanessa had said, her voice as cold as ice. "You're the one who kept secrets. You're the one who made things complicated. I don’t even know why you’re blaming me now."

Jennie had hoped, at least, that her best friend would understand—would apologize or, at the very least, try to make things right. But instead, Vanessa’s words only revealed her true feelings: she didn’t care, and worse—she hated Jennie for even suggesting that she might be wrong.

Vanessa had always been the strong one in their friendship, the one who made all the decisions, the one who knew how to manipulate every situation. But now? Now, Jennie realized that Vanessa was just playing the same game Sam had been playing, using her to get what she wanted, all the while hiding the truth.

Jennie spent the next few days in a daze, not able to sleep, her mind clouded by the pain of the betrayal. Vanessa’s words cut through her, echoing louder than anything else. "I hate you now, Jennie. I don't even want to talk to you."

As the days passed, Jennie couldn’t bring herself to even look at her phone. Every time it buzzed, her heart skipped a beat, fearing that it might be from Vanessa—only for it to be more silence.

But then there was the one thing that felt like a flicker of hope: Sam. Maybe, just maybe, he would reach out to her. Maybe he would realize how wrong everything had gone, how much she needed him.

Jennie gathered the courage and dialed his number. She waited, staring at the phone in her hand, her pulse pounding in her ears.

"Hello?" Sam's voice was distant, uninterested.

"Sam?" Jennie’s voice trembled, the weight of her emotions flooding back in an instant. "We need to talk. About what happened—about everything. You’ve been distant, and I don’t know what’s going on."

There was a pause on the other end of the line. And then, coldly, Sam spoke. "Jennie, I don't think there's anything to talk about."

Jennie blinked, stunned by his response. "What? Sam, I—"

"I don’t want to be dragged into your drama, Jennie. You’ve been acting... strange. I don’t have time for this." His voice was so dismissive, so cold, like it wasn’t even him. She didn’t recognize the person on the other end of the line.

"Sam, don’t do this. Please, just talk to me!" Jennie pleaded, her chest tight, but the line was already dead.

Sam had hung up on her.

Jennie stared at the phone in disbelief. The finality of it hit her harder than she expected. He’d just rejected her. He didn’t care. He didn’t want to listen.

But it wasn’t just Sam. Over the next few days, Jennie tried again and again to reach him. She called. She texted. She even left him voicemails, hoping that something—anything—would break through his wall of silence. But Sam never responded.

When she finally saw him at college, he ignored her completely. She walked past him in the halls, hoping for a glance, a hint of recognition. But there was nothing. Sam didn’t even look her way. His gaze passed over her like she was invisible.

Jennie felt like she was living in a nightmare. The boy she trusted, the boy she loved, was now a stranger. And so was Vanessa.

They were both gone.

It was like the world had shifted beneath her feet, and she was left clinging to a reality that no longer made sense. Her closest friend had turned against her. Her boyfriend had disappeared into thin air.

She couldn't breathe.

For days, Jennie wandered through the college campus, feeling like a ghost in her own life. People smiled at her, but she couldn’t even bring herself to return the smile. She didn’t have the energy to pretend everything was okay. It wasn’t. Nothing was.

And then, one day, the silence broke.

Jennie was sitting alone in the library when her phone buzzed. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly grabbed it, hoping—just hoping—that it was Sam.

But no, it was a message from Vanessa.

“I don’t want to talk to you anymore, Jennie. You’ve ruined everything. You kept secrets from me, and now I can’t trust you. I hate you for this. Don’t try to contact me again.”

Jennie felt the ground beneath her shift once more, and she stared at the screen in disbelief. Her best friend had truly cut her off.

She was completely alone.
