Episode 4

Following my father's words, Carl nodded before glancing at me. The way he looked at me, I couldn't tell if my presence bothered him or if he felt nothing at all. I went with the first option, it was the most plausible; after all, his sister hated me, so it was natural to feel my presence wasn't welcome and made him uncomfortable. I was a stranger who had arrived in his life without warning, at least that's how it felt because I felt the same way.

God, what had I gotten myself into?

My eyes went back to Carl, a part of me feeling curious while another was intimidated by his mere presence.

Carl possessed a cold face, no that wasn't entirely true. His face didn't show his emotions, he had a poker face that was hard to read. When the room emptied, a somewhat uncomfortable silence fell between my father and me.

I didn't like uncomfortable silences. I hated them, they said so much, one could fill these silences with our subjective thoughts, sometimes these weren't entirely pleasant.

For example, the silence made me think that all of this was nothing more than a mistake. I wasn't going to have the family I longed for here.

"Why did you bring her, Father? Why? Wasn't it enough to ruin my mother's life? Do you want to ruin my life too? She's the daughter of your lover! This is a great offense! Mom must be turning over in her grave right now!"

"She's my daughter too, Emily! She has no one. She needs protection."

"You should have just given her money and left her where you found her. What will others say when they find out? They'll make fun of me! I hate you! Carl, say something."

"Emily! Enough! Don't involve your brother! She's your sister, she's my daughter, and she will live in this house, whether you like it or not!"

"I don't want her! I don't like her!"

What was happening? Who left the TV on?

Wait, I feel like I'm missing something.

I tossed and turned on the comfortable bed I was on, hugging my cat that was sleeping next to my lap while wondering why they were arguing.

"Emily, don't be childish! This isn't like you."

Oh, Lord in heaven! Who is making so much noise? Who dares to wake me from my beauty sleep?

"Can you be quiet, you're so loud in someone else's room. Go make a fuss somewhere else. Damn it, what I hate most is that they..."

When I opened my eyes and contemplated the situation unfolding before me, and all the words I had heard a moment ago and what I contemplated before losing consciousness finished processing in my brain, I had no choice but to lighten my tone full of displeasure and plaster a hypocritical smile on my lips.

What the hell was going on? Where was I? And how did I end up getting here?

So many questions and no answers, especially not a satisfying one.

"Good morning, Daddy. It seems I had a strange dream, I dreamed that you had turned into a dog, but a horrible one, I've never seen a hellhound, but you looked like one, by the way, how did you transport me to this place? You didn't even care that I was unconscious, that's inhumane. But, anyway, in the dream you looked horrible..."

Before I could recount how terrifying he looked in my dream, as he resembled Cerberus, I was rudely interrupted. The person who interrupted me was a girl who seemed to be my age. Seeing her ethereal appearance, I couldn't help but think how beautiful she was. Her eyes were a light sky-blue color, almost transparent, her hair was chestnut and long, very long. The shape of her body was perfect. However, the beautiful girl before my eyes had an expression full of displeasure and contempt on her face as she watched me.

I pouted, feeling a little hurt. After all, I hadn't done anything to make her hate me. I barely knew her, and if I followed the thread of the conversation they had had, I could understand her displeasure.

"Why does she call you 'Daddy' and you let her? You never let me call you that after I turned 10. I see, you prefer this newcomer to your daughter who has been by your side all her life."

After saying that, she gave me a look full of hatred before leaving the room, not without slamming the door. That was so predictable and hostile.

"She's quite temperamental," I commented because I couldn't stand this family drama taken from some Mexican or Turkish soap opera, no, maybe Indian.

In Indian novels, there is always this type of dramatic plot.

"You must fix this, Father. At least you should wait for Emily to accept her before announcing her as your daughter. You'll only hurt her. Emily is also your daughter and you know how much she suffered after Mom's death. You can't do this to her."

I opened my eyes in surprise as I realized that in this room there was another person besides the Duke and Emily. The boy before my eyes seemed to be a younger version of my father, as his eyes were dark and his hair black as ebony. Even his face was similar in several aspects. There was a certain tension in the air that bothered me. I didn't know why, but I shuddered. It was as if I was in front of two predators.

A chill ran down my spine.

I didn't like this feeling, I didn't like how my body reacted by instinct; after all, it's not like I was a person with great self-love, but I wasn't the kind of person who had inferiority complexes or who was fearful of others either. That was ridiculous. So I hated feeling like this. I hated feeling weak.

"I know, you don't need to worry, Carl."
