I lay down on my bed, finally able to sleep peacefully. I thought I was going to be trapped in that place forever, maybe I'm already in heaven, that's why it's so quiet. But what about my sibling? I couldn't leave them behind, they only have me, and I only have them. This isn't right, I need to survive.
Sabrina suddenly woke up from her sleep and discovered she was in a hospital. She touched her head, feeling the intense pain. When she looked to her side, she saw her sibling smiling at her. She burst into tears upon seeing her sibling, finally reunited.
But why wasn't her sibling moving, why was she whispering without making a sound? "W-what...happened...to me?" she stammered, tears streaming down her face as she looked at her hands. She realized her wounds from the hardships she endured were still there. Yes, she was still there, she hadn't escaped yet.
Sabrina suddenly sat up again, feeling raindrops on her face. "Are you okay, child?" an old man asked. She nodded, looking at her palms again. It was just a dream, she thought she had already escaped that place.
She really wanted to see her sibling to rescue them from their aunt, their father's new wife. They didn't know how many days they'd been there; their house had died due to hunger.
The old man beside her woke up, and she helped him stand up, noticing his frail body due to hunger. Sabrina couldn't bear seeing people like that, so she stood up silently and left. "Where are you going?" the old man asked. "I'm going to look for food," she replied without looking back.
As she was about to step away, the old man said, "I'll come with you." He stood up, "It's hard, you might get hurt." "I don't need your help, I can do it alone." She spoke emotionlessly and continued walking.
The old woman stood up and held the old man's arm to stop him. As Sabrina searched for food, she suddenly tripped and felt a sharp object pierce her palm. "Argh..." she cried out in pain. In the darkness, she couldn't see the surroundings. She burst into tears from the pain, and suddenly heard footsteps approaching.
Her eyes widened as she saw a figure in front of her; fear took over, and she covered her mouth to stifle her cries. "Sabrina." She immediately turned around, recognizing the voice. She hugged the person tightly, tears streaming down her face as her fear dissipated, knowing she was followed by the two old people.
"Are you okay, child?" the old woman asked with concern. Sabrina slowly let go of the old man and looked around, but the figure she saw earlier was gone. The old man noticed her injured hand and quickly tore a piece of cloth from his clothes to bandage it.
"Thank you...sorry if I worried you..." She was about to apologize when the old man interrupted her. "Let's just go home, something bad might happen to you again." She nodded and looked back in the direction where she saw the figure. I'll get to know you.
As they walked back, the surroundings were filled with silence. Instead, Sabrina decided to ask the old couple about themselves. "What are your names?" The old man stopped walking, and so did Sabrina and the old woman. "My name is Tommy, you can call me Tito Tommy or Tatay."
"Why do you want me to call you Tatay?" Before Mang Tommy answered, he sat down on a metal rod. "You remind me of my daughter, Lhianne. We've been separated for years, and I haven't seen her since my wife took her away from me." He spoke, staring at his wedding ring.
"They said I wasn't good enough, so it's better if my wife takes care of our daughter." "Where is your wife?" Sabrina asked emotionlessly. "My wife...has a new husband. She left me because of a misunderstanding." He looked at Sabrina, his eyes showing pain and sadness.
Sabrina sat down beside Mang Tommy. "You know, Lhianne is very lucky. I, on the other hand, haven't seen my real father in a long time. I thought that when my mother got a new partner, my life would get better, but it only got worse."
I talked to mom back then because I didn't like the behavior of her new partner. He would always come home drunk and plant anger in us. And the worst part was when mom left for her night shift at the bar.
She looked up, and immediately looked at Mang Tommy.
