Episode 4

I took the teacup with both hands. I sniffed it a little, the aroma of the tea was quite pleasant, a slight smell of mint, and the taste seemed to be delicious.

Since my mother drank it in one gulp. When I was about to take the first sip, something inside me told me not to, I pretended to take a light sip and then put it back on the table.

"Chiama Merlina, dille che prepari una sola stanza. Sono ospiti di mio figlio."

...(Call Merlina, tell her to prepare only one room. They are my son's guests)...

The woman gives instructions to one of the maids. The maid bows. All the employees gradually withdraw until there is not a single one left.

I remained silent, discreetly observing the woman in front of me. There was something I had learned in all these years, it was to remain silent, to observe in total silence.

I recorded each of her movements, each gesture she made. The subtle way she holds the cup, the gentle way she drinks the tea.

She was an extremely elegant woman, she did every movement delicately. It was evident that she came from a noble family.

She had manners that only occurred in high society. Manners that my mother never wanted to learn.

I had to adapt quickly if I didn't want to be the clown of the circus. Let's be realistic, asking someone for a favor is like putting a gun to your temple.

Sooner or later they will shoot you, you must do what they say and you automatically become their maid.

So I said in a calm voice.

"My mother and I appreciate everything you have done for us. Thank you very much for picking us up at the airport. Your house is beautiful, you are a very beautiful woman."

"I will speak with my father in Mexico and relieve you of all responsibility for us. It is best that we take the reins of your life."

"Let's leave this house, grateful for your enormous kindness."

The woman smiles gracefully, and answers.

"I don't think you were informed what you have come for."

"My son needs a wife. He has many lovers."

"A woman who gives him beautiful children. Who he can take to big parties. Who is intelligent, cold-blooded."

The expression on my face said it all. I was stunned, it was something I had trouble understanding.

"Your wedding to my son will be in two weeks. So from now on you will stay and live in this mansion." Added the woman.

Instinctively my mouth opens, I didn't know if I had heard correctly or my ears were already failing me.

"Mmmm... My... My what?" I whispered nervously.

"Oh, child. I think it would be a mistake for you to marry my son." She whispered.

"The mistake would be for me to marry a total stranger." I thought out loud, something that my future husband's mother did not like at all.

"Your father betrothed you to my son. He did it last night. My husband told me just this morning. It also caught me by surprise." She added coldly.

I sigh deeply. It was hard for me to accept that I would soon be a married woman to a total stranger.

"To tell you the truth, you seem like a pretty woman to me. I hope you are intelligent and not just a pretty face. A woman without brains disappoints."

I forced a mocking smile. I could hardly believe what I was hearing. It was hard for me to understand everything. I wanted to run out of there, but, every muscle in my body was paralyzed.

I had no way out, it was like entering a maze with no exit. Each step I took, was worse than the last.

My tears began to fall down my cheeks, I couldn't control that feeling of frustration. It was simply stronger than me...

Totally defeated, I ran my hands over my face. I wiped away every tear that fell from my blue eyes. Resigned to marrying Camila's son.

A thousand times I preferred to be the wife, the woman she presents on her arm, than to be the lover, the woman without power, the vixen who pleases him in bed and receives nothing in return.

"I hope to meet my future husband soon." I said in a curt tone.

"I imagine you must be tired. My maid will take you to your room." Said the hostess of the house, without taking her eyes off me.

I stood up, accepting my destiny... I couldn't swim against the tide, I couldn't do anything. They wanted to marry me, I would sign the papers and become the Italian's wife.

"Yes, the trip was very long and tiring." I replied, bowing before my future mother-in-law.

She raised two of her fingers and one of the maids approaches us.

"Ladies, come with me." Luckily, she spoke our same language, otherwise, I would be crazy.

We followed the woman to the rooms. Both bedrooms were on the lower part.

Maybe they were guest rooms and we were not worthy of using one upstairs, I didn't care where I slept, however, my mother was not amused at all.

"Do they think we are servants?" My mother commented furiously.

I turned to see her, we were nobody in this house. So being demanding was the worst mistake we could make.

The maid sent by Camila opens the door to the room.

"For now, both of you will sleep in this room. Later, Mr. Maximiliano will come to see you." She informs us.

I entered first. The room was nice, clean and above all had everything you need to sleep comfortably.

What I liked the most is that there was no noise. It was quiet and peaceful. I could sleep all day without any problem.

I took off my shoes and left them next to the door, I went in search of the bathroom. I needed to take an urgent shower, then I wanted to sleep until the so-called Maximiliano appeared and we could talk.

Time passed and after having slept for a long time, I woke up. I see a luxurious dress on the sofa, on top there was a written note that said.

..."As soon as you wake up, get dressed, they will be waiting for you outside"...
