Jay and the Song of Silence

Jay didn’t believe in ghosts. Or curses. Or anything that couldn’t be explained by logic.

But lately, something had been wrong.

It started as a feeling—subtle, like an itch in the back of his mind. A creeping sense that something was just off. He noticed it in the way the air felt heavy when he walked alone at night, in the way certain shadows stretched just a little too far.

And then, there was Liora.

Jay wasn’t the closest to her, but he noticed things. The way her gaze lingered somewhere distant, lost in thoughts she wouldn’t share. The way her fingers brushed against her throat absentmindedly, as if something was missing.

Today was no different. He spotted her in the hallway, whispering with Mina. Their expressions were tense, their voices hushed.

Something was definitely wrong.

Jay wasn’t the type to meddle, but his gut told him this was important.

And Jay had learned a long time ago—when his gut told him something, he should listen.

Later that evening, Jay sat at his desk, staring at his open notebook.

Without thinking, he had been absentmindedly sketching something in the margins. Musical notes, tangled together like a web. He didn’t even remember drawing them.

His chest tightened.

Why did this melody look familiar?

He tapped his fingers against the desk, then hummed a few notes under his breath.

The moment the sound left his lips—

His bedroom light flickered.

Jay froze. The air around him suddenly felt thick, pressing in on him from all sides. His heart pounded.

And then—

A whisper.

Soft. Barely there.

"Jay."

His blood ran cold.

He spun around—nothing. Just his empty room, shadows pooling in the corners.

Jay swallowed hard.

No. This wasn’t happening. He was just tired. His mind was playing tricks on him.

But deep down, he knew.

This wasn’t his imagination.

Something was watching.

And somehow, it all led back to that song.

___(at school morning)

The morning sun cast a soft golden light over the school courtyard, but the usual warmth of a new day felt muted. The air was crisp, yet something heavy lingered in the atmosphere—like a song left unfinished, waiting for its final note.

Students moved through the hallways, chatting, laughing, rushing to their classrooms. Everything seemed normal. But for three students, nothing was normal anymore.

Jay arrived early, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. His eyes scanned the crowd, searching. He spotted Liora and Mina near their lockers, deep in conversation.

They looked… uneasy.

Jay frowned. He wasn’t imagining things. Something was going on, and whatever it was, they were at the center of it.

Liora & Mina

“I barely slept again,” Liora muttered, her fingers gripping the strap of her bag. “The song was in my dreams again. But this time… I think I saw something.”

Mina tilted her head. “Saw what?”

Liora hesitated. The memory was hazy, like looking through fog. “A figure. In the dark. I couldn’t see its face, but it was there. And then I tried to speak, but—” She swallowed. “I still couldn’t make a sound.”

Mina’s eyes darkened. “Okay, yeah, this is officially not normal.”

Liora sighed, running a hand through her hair. “As if it ever was.”

Just then—

“You two look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

They turned.

Jay stood a few feet away, watching them carefully. He wasn’t smirking like he usually did, wasn’t teasing. He looked… serious.

Mina raised an eyebrow. “Eavesdropping much?”

Jay rolled his eyes. “You’re not exactly whispering.” He crossed his arms. “What’s going on?”

Liora hesitated. She and Mina exchanged a glance. They had never planned on telling anyone, but—

Then she noticed something.

The way Jay’s hand clenched slightly at his side. The faint crease between his brows.

Like he had seen something too.

Liora’s stomach twisted.

“Jay…” she asked carefully. “Have you heard the song?”

Jay’s expression flickered—just for a second. But it was enough.

Mina caught it too. She straightened. “Wait. You know about it?”

Jay exhaled. He hadn’t planned on saying anything, but now that they were looking at him like that—like they already knew—there was no point in lying.

“I don’t know what it is,” he admitted. “But last night, I—” He stopped, running a hand through his hair. “I heard something. And when I tried to hum the melody, the lights flickered. Then I heard a voice.”

Liora felt a chill crawl down her spine.

Mina blinked. “A voice?”

Jay nodded. His voice was quieter now. “It whispered my name.”

Silence.

The sounds of the bustling school morning faded into the background.

Mina exhaled. “Okay. That’s it. We’re being haunted.”

Liora didn’t laugh.

Jay didn’t either.

Because deep down, they all knew—

This was only the beginning.
