Kael landed face-first on the dragon’s head.
For exactly three seconds, no one moved.
The dragon blinked.
Kael blinked.
Then the dragon roared in sheer outrage, shaking its massive head violently.
Kael immediately regretted every decision that led to this moment.
“NONONONO—” He flailed wildly, gripping onto the beast’s horns for dear life as it thrashed like an angry bull. His stomach lurched as he was tossed left, right, and almost straight into the air.
Darin, standing safely on the ground, cupped his hands around his mouth. “KAEL, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?”
“I DON’T KNOW!” Kael shouted back, barely holding on. “I’M IMPROVISING!”
“WELL, STOP IT!”
“GREAT IDEA! LET ME JUST CALMLY ASK THE DRAGON TO PUT ME DOWN!”
The dragon, in response, let out an earth-shaking screech and tried to smash its own head against the ground.
Kael screamed. “BAD IDEA, BAD IDEA!”
At this point, the villagers had stopped running and were just watching the spectacle. A few had even started placing bets.
“I give the boy ten seconds before he’s dragon food,” muttered Old Man Relk, who still had a chicken under one arm.
“Nah,” said the baker, rubbing his chin. “That dumb luck of his? He’ll survive somehow.”
Meanwhile, Kael was still desperately trying to hold on. He had no idea what to do, no clue why his body was suddenly defying physics, and zero percent confidence in his dragon-riding abilities.
Then, suddenly—
The cloaked figure lifted their hand.
Kael felt it instantly.
That same pull from before—like something inside him was reacting to their presence. His chest ached, his vision blurred, and for a moment, it was like he was somewhere else entirely.
A golden city.
A massive temple.
A voice calling his name—
“Kael!”
Kael snapped back to reality just in time to realize he was slipping.
“Oh, crap—”
His fingers lost their grip, and for the second time that day—
Kael plummeted.
Gravity Is Not My Friend
He hit the ground hard. Too hard.
But instead of breaking every bone in his body…
The earth shuddered.
A golden shockwave erupted from the impact, rippling across the ground like lightning in slow motion. The dragon staggered backward, clearly startled.
The villagers gasped.
Kael groaned, rolling onto his back. “I hate today.”
Darin strode over, looming above him. “Boy. You literally just survived falling off a dragon’s head.”
Kael wheezed. “I am… painfully aware.”
The cloaked figure finally approached, standing at the edge of the crater Kael had just accidentally created.
Kael squinted up at them. “Okay. No more cryptic nonsense. Who. The hell. Am I?”
The figure studied him for a long moment. Then, in a calm voice, they said—
“You are a lost god.”
Silence.
Kael blinked. “…Sorry, what?”
“A lost god,” the figure repeated. “You were not born on this world. You were sent here.”
Kael stared. Then, after a long pause—
“Okay, but like… why?”
The figure’s lips curled slightly, almost amused. “That… is what you must remember.”
Kael groaned. “Great. Fantastic. Love that. So not only do I have mystery superpowers, but now I’m also a mystery orphan god with amnesia?”
The dragon, now extremely frustrated that no one was paying attention to it, let out a furious roar.
Kael sighed. “Oh, for crying out loud.”
Darin handed him a sword. “Here. Try not to die.”
Kael took it, holding it like it was a particularly angry snake. “Oh sure, give the guy with amnesia a deadly weapon. What could possibly go wrong?”
The figure hummed. “You already know how to use it.”
Kael scoffed. “Yeah, I really doubt that.”
The dragon charged.
Kael’s body moved on its own.
One second, he was standing there like an idiot.
The next—
The sword glowed.
Golden energy crackled along the blade as Kael twisted, his feet barely touching the ground. The sword slashed through the air—
And with a single resonant boom, the dragon was sent flying.
Silence.
Kael stared at the sword in his hands.
The villagers stared at Kael.
Darin exhaled. “Boy. If you tell me you don’t know how you did that—”
“I DON’T KNOW HOW I DID THAT.”
The cloaked figure chuckled. “Then it seems your body remembers more than your mind.”
Kael groaned. “This sucks.”
Then he heard soft laughter.
His breath caught.
Because that laugh—
It wasn’t just anyone’s.
It belonged to her.
Kael turned, and there, standing by the well, was a girl he hadn’t seen before.
She had long, dark hair tied up in a messy ponytail, mischievous eyes, and an expression that immediately told him he was in danger.
Not physical danger.
Something worse.
Romantic danger.
She smirked. “Well. That was dramatic.”
Kael swallowed. “Uh.”
The girl tilted her head. “You got a name, dragon boy?”
Kael’s brain shut down.
Darin clapped him on the back. “Go on, boy. Try not to make a fool of yourself.”
Kael, still staring, blurted out the first thing that came to mind.
“I think my name is Kael.”
She raised an eyebrow. “You think?”
Kael winced. “It’s been a weird day.”
The girl laughed again. “I’m Lyra. Try not to fall off anything else, okay?”
Kael, for the first time that day, forgot about the dragon.
Because suddenly…
He had a whole new kind of problem.
