The city air was crisp, carrying the scent of rain on the horizon. Olivia stepped onto the sidewalk, her heartbeat steady, her mind clear. For the first time in years, she wasn’t weighed down by the expectations of others—by Alex’s carefully planned future or by the intoxicating possibility of Ethan.
She was free.
But freedom came with its own kind of uncertainty.
She tightened her grip on her bag and walked, her heels clicking against the pavement, her destination unknown. The streets blurred past her—couples laughing outside a wine bar, a street musician playing a soft melody on his guitar, the honking of impatient taxi drivers. The world continued moving, unaffected by her decision, yet everything felt different.
Her phone buzzed in her palm.
Alex.
She hesitated. The logical part of her knew she should respond—give him closure, an explanation. But the emotional part of her wasn’t ready for that conversation. Not yet. Instead, she turned off her phone and slipped it into her bag.
She needed space to breathe. To think.
Her feet carried her to a quiet park, where the city noise softened into the rustling of leaves and distant chatter of people enjoying their evening. She found an empty bench and sat down, wrapping her arms around herself.
For years, she had been so sure of the life she was supposed to live. She had loved Alex—or at least, she had loved the idea of what they could have been. But somewhere along the way, she had lost herself in the expectations, in the shoulds and musts that dictated her every move.
And then Ethan had come along like a force of nature, shaking everything she thought she knew. But he wasn’t the answer, either. He had been a moment—a necessary, beautiful, painful moment—that had forced her to confront her truth.
She wasn’t choosing Alex.
She wasn’t choosing Ethan.
She was choosing herself.
A soft chuckle escaped her lips. It was terrifying, really, this not knowing. But it was also exhilarating.
For the first time in as long as she could remember, she didn’t have a plan.
The realization settled in her chest, warm and unfamiliar.
She pulled out her phone again—not to answer Alex, but to search for something else.
A flight. A trip. A chance to disappear for a little while and figure out what came next.
Paris. Rome. Tokyo. The world was vast, and she had spent too long standing still.
Her fingers hovered over the screen. And then, without overthinking it, she booked the ticket.
A one-way flight to Paris.
She exhaled, leaning back against the bench, staring up at the sky as the first stars began to appear.
Maybe this was reckless. Maybe she’d regret it.
But for now, it felt right.
And that was enough.
Letting Go
As she sat in the quiet of the park, a strange mix of excitement and fear settled in her stomach.
She was really doing this.
Tomorrow night, she’d be on a plane to a city she’d only dreamed of visiting, with no itinerary, no plans, no expectations. Just herself and the open road ahead.
The thought sent a thrill through her.
But before she could move forward, there were still things she needed to leave behind.
Alex.
She pulled out her phone again, staring at his name one last time. She couldn’t leave him waiting, couldn’t disappear without giving him the truth.
Taking a deep breath, she pressed “call.”
He picked up almost immediately. “Olivia—thank God. What’s going on? Where have you been?”
His voice was urgent, desperate. She could picture him pacing in his apartment, still in the suit he probably hadn’t changed out of since this morning.
She closed her eyes, steadying herself. “I’m sorry, Alex. I should have called sooner.”
He exhaled sharply. “Yeah, you should have. Liv, I’ve been losing my mind. Just tell me what’s happening. Whatever it is, we can fix it.”
She swallowed the lump in her throat. “We can’t fix this, Alex.”
Silence.
She forced herself to continue. “I’ve been lying to myself for a long time, trying to be the person I thought I was supposed to be. But the truth is, I don’t know if I ever really wanted this.”
“Liv, don’t—”
“I don’t want to get married,” she said, her voice unwavering. “Not to you. Not to anyone right now.”
The words hung between them.
She heard him exhale, a heavy, defeated sound.
“Is this about him?” Alex asked quietly.
For a moment, she thought about lying. But she owed him honesty.
“It started that way,” she admitted. “But it’s not about him anymore. It’s about me.”
Alex didn’t respond right away. When he finally spoke, his voice was raw. “So that’s it?”
She bit her lip, hating that she was hurting him. “Yeah. That’s it.”
Another long pause. Then, quietly, “I loved you, Olivia.”
She felt her heart clench. “I loved you, too.”
And maybe that was the saddest part. Love had been there, once. But it hadn’t been enough.
“I hope you find what you’re looking for,” Alex murmured.
Tears pricked at her eyes. “You too.”
The call ended.
She sat there for a long time, staring at the darkened screen.
It was done.
On Her Own
By the time Olivia arrived back at her apartment, the weight on her chest had started to lift.
She packed light—a suitcase filled with essentials, her passport tucked into her bag. She didn’t know how long she’d be gone. A month? A year? Maybe she’d fall in love with Paris and never come back.
The thought made her smile.
The next evening, as she stood in the airport terminal, ticket in hand, she felt something she hadn’t in a long time.
Anticipation.
Excitement.
Hope.
Her phone buzzed. A message from Ethan.
Ethan: I heard you’re leaving. Paris, huh?
She hesitated before replying.
Olivia: Yeah. I need a fresh start.
A moment passed.
Ethan: Good. You deserve that.
Her chest tightened. Whatever had happened between them, he had been right. She had needed him to shake her awake, to remind her that life wasn’t meant to be lived on autopilot.
She typed back one last message.
Olivia: Thank you, Ethan. For everything.
His reply came almost instantly.
Ethan: Anytime, Liv.
She smiled, slipping her phone into her pocket.
As the final boarding call for her flight echoed through the terminal, Olivia took a deep breath and stepped forward.
She wasn’t running away.
She was running toward something.
Herself.
And for the first time in a long time, that was enough.
