Ayame, Princess Of The Sky

Obituary

In the spring of 2002 in Japan, a tragic plane crash occurred that shocked the entire country. A plane crashed into the open sea while on its way to Los Angeles. On board, there were several important figures and officials who were traveling for official duties. The Tokushu Kyuunan Tai*¹ dispatched a team of 200 people to search for and rescue the passengers and crew.

A private television station broadcasted the news about the accident. The news reported that the Tokushu Kyuunan Tai team, who had been searching for several days, declared that all passengers and crew members were dead. The entire Japanese population mourned upon hearing the news.

The next day, two high school girls were eating at their usual ramen shop. While they were eating, they accidentally overheard the news about the plane crash being aired on the television in the shop.

The news stated that the Tokushu Kyuunan Tai team, after days of searching, had found no survivors, meaning all passengers, including the pilot and crew, were declared dead.

"tokutei sareta higaisha no hitori wa Hamada Sitoshi to iu jinbutsu desu"

One of the news anchors provided information about the victim, saying, "One of the identified victims is a person named Hamada Sitoshi."

One of the girls, upon hearing this news, immediately started crying.

"otōsan … sore wa otōsan no namaedesu"

(“Father… That’s my father’s name”) the girl cried out.

All the customers in the shop were shocked, realizing that one of the victims had a daughter who was present there.

"Sayaka wa naze naiteirun desu ka?"

("Why are you crying, Sayaka?") asked her friend.

"Yuri," said the girl, whose name was revealed to be Sayaka, as she hugged her friend. Sayaka’s crying only grew more intense as she clung to her friend.

Yuri, confused by her friend’s tears, asked her to explain why she was crying. But Sayaka only pointed to the television in the shop and repeated, "My father." Yuri, shocked and saddened, invited her friend to go home.

Once they reached home, Sayaka asked Yuri to stay with her for the night. Sayaka and Yuri had been close friends since elementary school. Yuri, understanding her friend’s grief, agreed to stay. The whole night, Sayaka could only cry, remembering all the moments she had shared with her father.

"Why did you leave me alone, father?" Sayaka thought to herself as she continued to cry. Sayaka had become an orphan after her father’s death. Her mother had passed away two years earlier from brain cancer. Her mother had fought the disease for two years.

Sayaka cried in Yuri’s lap, and Yuri stayed by her side until she finally fell asleep. Once Yuri noticed that her friend had fallen asleep, she gently moved Sayaka’s head onto the pillow.

At 7:30 AM, the phone in Sayaka’s house rang. Yuri immediately answered the phone since Sayaka was still asleep. Politely, Yuri answered the call.

"Good morning, this is the Hamada Sitoshi residence," Yuri greeted. "How can I help you?"

A male voice on the other end of the line introduced himself as a lawyer representing the Hamada family and asked to speak with Sayaka. Yuri informed him that Sayaka was still asleep after crying all night. However, the man insisted on coming immediately.
