Ava's eyes locked onto Liam's, searching for any sign of deception. But all she saw was sincerity and regret.
"I'm listening," Ava said, her voice firm but gentle.
Liam took a deep breath and began to explain. "I used to work for a big corporation," he said. "I was a rising star, making good money and climbing the ladder."
Ava's eyes narrowed. "What did you do?" she asked.
Liam's eyes dropped, and he paused before speaking. "I was involved in some shady dealings," he said. "I helped the company cover up some environmental disasters, and I lied to the public about it."
Ava's eyes widened in shock. "Why did you do it?" she asked.
Liam shrugged. "I was young and ambitious," he said. "I wanted to make a name for myself, and I didn't care who I hurt in the process."
Ava felt a wave of disappointment wash over her. She had thought Liam was better than that.
But as she looked into his eyes, Ava saw something there that gave her hope. She saw remorse and regret, a deep desire to make things right.
"What happened?" Ava asked, her voice softer.
Liam's eyes dropped again. "I got caught," he said. "The company fired me, and I had to testify against them in court."
Ava's eyes widened in surprise. "You testified against them?" she repeated.
Liam nodded. "Yes," he said. "I knew it was the right thing to do, even if it meant sacrificing my career."
Ava felt a surge of admiration for Liam. He had done the right thing, even when it was hard.
As they sat there in silence, Ava knew she had a choice to make. She could forgive Liam and give him a second chance, or she could walk away.
But as she looked into his eyes, Ava knew what she had to do.
"Liam," Ava said, her voice firm. "I want to forgive you. But I need you to promise me one thing."
Liam's eyes locked onto hers, filled with hope. "Anything," he said.
Ava's eyes narrowed. "You have to promise me that you'll always tell me the truth," she said. "No more secrets, no more lies."
Liam's face lit up with a smile. "I promise," he said. "I'll always tell you the truth, Ava. No matter what."
Ava's heart swelled with emotion. She knew she was taking a risk, but she also knew that she couldn't walk away from Liam.
Not now, not when she had finally seen the real him.
As they hugged, Ava felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that she had made the right decision.
But as they pulled back, Ava saw something in Liam's eyes that gave her pause. It was a flicker of fear, a hint of uncertainty.
"What is it?" Ava asked, her voice soft.
Liam's eyes dropped, and he paused before speaking. "I'm just worried about what might happen next," he said. "I've got enemies, Ava. People who don't want me to be happy."
Ava's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't thought about that.
But as she looked into Liam's eyes, Ava knew what she had to do. She had to stand by him, no matter what.
"We'll face it together," Ava said, her voice firm.
Liam's face lit up with a smile. "Thank you, Ava," he said. "Thank you for believing in me."
As they hugged again, Ava knew that she had made the right decision. She had taken a chance on Liam, and it was going to be worth it.
But as they pulled back, Ava saw something that made her heart skip a beat. It was a figure watching them from across the park.
A figure who looked familiar.
Ava's eyes narrowed. Who was it?
And what did they want?
