...A New Beginning (The First Struggle)

The office felt different on Amelia’s second day. The excitement from yesterday had worn off, and now it was just the reality of figuring out how things worked at Hartley Enterprises. She had barely had time to catch her breath when Clara, her new manager, handed her a hefty project and instructed her to dive in.

Amelia sat at her desk, glancing at the papers scattered before her, each more intimidating than the last. The task seemed straightforward enough—help with compiling a quarterly report. Yet, as she began sifting through the data, the complexity became apparent. The numbers didn’t make sense. Some files were missing. And nothing seemed to align with what she had been told.

Her mind raced. The last thing she wanted was to ask for help too soon. After all, she was the new one. Shouldn’t she already know how to do this? But every time she opened a new file, the confusion deepened. She glanced around the office, watching her coworkers breeze through their tasks with ease. Clara was in a meeting, and most of the others seemed busy. Amelia didn’t want to disturb anyone, so she pushed forward, but it felt like she was running in circles.

By midday, she had only managed to organize a fraction of the information she needed. Her lunch break was nothing more than a rushed sandwich at her desk. When Clara stopped by to check in, Amelia quickly hid the pile of half-done work, trying to maintain a facade of progress.

“Everything going okay?” Clara asked with a smile, noticing the flurry of papers scattered around Amelia’s desk.

“Uh, yeah, just a little slow,” Amelia replied, trying her best to sound confident.

Clara nodded. “That’s understandable. It’s a lot to take in at first. You’ll get there.”

But Amelia couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that Clara was being too kind. She wasn’t sure if she was progressing as she should be, or if she was just faking it well enough to keep from being called out. She wasn’t used to feeling this unsure. Back in her previous job, Amelia had been confident, able to handle things with ease. But here, she felt lost.

As the afternoon wore on, the pressure mounted. Amelia’s inbox filled with more emails than she could process, each with its own task, question, or request for her attention. She tried to focus, but everything seemed to blend together. The feeling of being overwhelmed crept closer with each passing hour.

At 5:30 p.m., when most of her coworkers began packing up, Amelia remained at her desk, unable to leave until she figured out at least one of the reports. She wasn’t about to go home feeling like she’d failed on her first day.

By the time the office finally began to empty out, she was no closer to completing her task. Exhausted, she let out a deep breath and closed her laptop. The empty office around her felt quiet and cold, a stark contrast to the flurry of activity she had experienced throughout the day.

As she walked out of the building, Amelia couldn’t help but wonder if she was in over her head. But she knew one thing for sure—if she didn’t push through, she’d never make it. She had to prove herself, not just to her colleagues, but to herself as well.
