Chapter 9: "The Explanation"

Max took a deep breath and began to explain. "Sophia and I were engaged,, but it was an arrangement made by our families. I never loved her, and I realized I couldn't go through with the marriage."

Emily listened, her heart aching. "Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Max reached out and took her hand. "I was scared of losing you. I knew you deserved the truth, but I was afraid of your reaction."

Emily pulled her hand away, her mind racing. "What about Sophia's claim that you're using me to get back at her?"

Max's face twisted in anguish. "That's not true. I swear, Emily, my feelings for you are real. I was drawn to you from the moment I met you."

Emily studied his face, searching for any sign of deception. But all she saw was sincerity and desperation.

"Emily, please forgive me," Max pleaded. "I know I messed up, but I can't lose you. You're the only one who truly understands me."

Emily's heart wavered. She wanted to believe Max, but the hurt and betrayal ran deep.

Just as she was about to respond, Sophia appeared at the door, her eyes blazing with fury….

Chapter 10: "The Confrontation"

Sophia's eyes narrowed as she gazed at Emily. "You're the one who's been screwing my fiancé, aren't you?" she spat.

Emily stood her ground, despite the discomfort. "Sophia, I didn't know about you and Max. And even if I had, I wouldn't have pursued him if he was engaged."

Sophia snorted. "You expect me to believe that? You're just a homewrecker, Emily."

Max intervened, his voice firm. "Sophia, stop. This isn't Emily's fault. I made the choices, not her."

Sophia turned on Max. "You're just trying to protect your little mistress, aren't you?"

The tension in the room escalated until it was almost palpable. Emily felt like she was caught in a nightmare.

Suddenly, Sophia's expression changed from anger to a cold, calculating calm. "I'll give you an ultimatum, Max. Choose between me and Emily. If you choose her, you'll lose everything - your family, your fortune, your reputation."

Max hesitated, and Emily's heart sank. Would he really choose her over his family and fortune?
