“Hmm-uhh...” Josh exhaled deeply as he dragged the heavy carcass of the alpha wolf deep into the woods. After several minutes he stopped and looked at the large tree which had branches strong enough to hold a few tons. “Well, this place seems fine…”
He took the same rope he used to drag the carcass and firmly tied it around the dead wolf’s neck then he threw one end of the rope over the sturdy branch of that old but burly tree.
He took a deep breath and with a wicked grin, he began to pull the rope with full force. Finally, when the dead body of the big bad wolf was high enough on the scaffolding, Josh firmly tied and knotted the rope around the trunk.
The once-great and respected Alpha of its time now hung from the colossal tree in sheer humiliation. It was a remonstrance warning to all creatures of the woods that someone even more ferocious and formidable now walked among them in these woods.
“This...will make them understand the menacing consequences of confronting us…” He chuckled maniacally and left.
After several minutes of briskly walking away, he returned back to Tim and Luke who were standing outside the cabin. Shortly after his arrival, multiple mournful howls echoed in the distance behind Josh.
“What the heck did you just do with that dead wolf?” Tim asked with a hint of obscured fear in his eyes.
“Oh...I merely sent them a message...” said Josh as he confidently grinned.
“I see…” said Luke with his dead eyes. Luke was still in a state of trauma. He turned his back and started walking inside the cabin.
Before Josh could place his hand on Luke’s shoulder, Tim stopped him. “Let him go, Josh. He needs some space.”
Josh softly exhaled. “I see...of course.”
***TWO HOURS LATER***
Smeared in dirt, Luke went inside the cabin where Ben was standing beside little Kevin’s battered body covered with an old worn-out white sheet which Ben found in the cabin. Luke properly wrapped the corpse in those sheets that became its eventual coffin. He carried the dead-cold body to the small grave he had dug a few feet away from the cabin and placed the child’s corpse inside.
After he completed the burial he sat beside Kevin’s grave, to bid his one final farewell. And so were the others standing over the child’s grave holding wildflowers in their hands. “I’m sorry, Kevin...you deserved better. Forgive me...I couldn’t keep my promise. Farewell...may you find peace…”
Everyone placed flowers on the grave, bid their last farewell and concluded the penuriously organized but earnestly conducted funeral.
