THE LOST BOOK: Chronicles of the Forgotten Realm
Chapter 2 - The Shock
Mia
Hmm, tell me more about it.
Tink
Sure, but after class." *smiles*
Tink is my one and only friend. Her full name? Tinkerbell. Yes, like the fairy Tinkerbell. But unlike the fairy, this Tinkerbell is as rich as they come, with an attitude that could make even the toughest person think twice. Underneath all that, though, she’s got a soft, kind heart. And, of course, she’s top of the class. No one dares talk trash about her and live to tell the tale.
Everyone here fears her and her family. One, her dad’s brother is the infamous mafia kingpin of Italy—though her dad wanted nothing to do with that side of things. Two, her family’s wealthy from a vineyard and wine empire, and they’ve got bodyguards with them all the time.
And how do I know all this? I’m their neighbor. My house is right next to her mansion. I’m not poor by any means, but compared to her… well, it’s different.
My grandparents, whom I’d never met, left me a house and a trust fund, so I’ll be comfortable if I manage it well. They used to own a few restaurant chains, but sold them to live a quieter life. After they passed, a mysterious letter arrived, saying I’d inherited their home and money.
My own parents died in a tragic accident, leaving me in an orphanage. It wasn’t terrible, but… it wasn’t great either. When I was 17, I finally ran away because the priest running the place was getting too close for comfort. I had only 50 dollars on me that I’d stolen from him, and stayed at a rundown hotel for a while. Then the letter about my grandparents changed everything. At least now I had a warm roof over my head.
Present time… the school bell rings*
Mia
*looks at Tink* "Now, tell me about this town and its mysterious library."
Tink
*exclaims* "Wait—you don’t know about the town?"
Mia
"Um, no... You know my story. Parents gone... orphanage…”
Tink
"Stop. Okay, fine, I get it. What do you know about magic?"
Mia
Magic? Like Tinkerbell, fairies, and all that?" *laughs*
Tink
Serious tone* "No, I mean real magic. Do you know anything about it?"
Mia
*nervously* "They’re not real… right?"
Tink
*nods seriously* "Very real."
Mia
"No, they’re not! You’re just messing with me."
Tink
Why would I do that?" *looks at Mia with a strange expression*
Mia
"Fine. Prove it, then."
Tink
Okay, you know what? Come to my house after class. I’ll clear up all your doubts about it."
Mia
*smirks* "If this is a prank, you’ll regret it."
The rest of the classes go by, but my mind is spinning. I can’t focus on anything. It’s like my whole world is out of control. By the time the last class ends, I’m still in a daze.
Suddenly, someone grabs my hand and starts pulling me.
*Cold water splashes over Mia’s face*
Mia
*coughs* "What was that for?"
Tink
"You’ve been in shock all day."
Mia
*looks up to see Tink holding a bucket*
Tink
*mumbling* "Guess that wasn’t enough to snap you back to reality."
Mia
But seriously… why the cold water?"
Tink
Oh, come on. You look amazing as a wet rat!"
Mia
Oh my god, I can’t believe you did that."
Tink
"Of course! You totally rock the look, though."
Mia
*catching her breath* "Alright, alright. Let’s go to your house."
Mia
So you can explain everything from the start."
They link arms and head toward Tink’s house
