The End of the Beginning
Maya and Lucas had come far from their days at the orphanage. Now, on the brink of college, they stood together at the campus gates, watching families say their goodbyes. No one was there for them, but Maya found comfort in Lucas’s presence. They had made it this far together.
Maya had chosen science, driven by memories of past lives, while Lucas wanted to be a teacher. As a senior guided them toward their dorms, Maya’s focus shifted. Across the street, she saw a family—a mother, father, and older brother—doting over their daughter. They laughed, hugged, and reassured her about her first day.
Something twisted inside Maya. That girl was her killer, now living a carefree life, completely unaware of the destruction she had caused. Rage consumed her. She couldn’t stand the sight of her, so happy and free, while Maya had been doomed to suffer across countless lives.
Without a word, Maya dropped her bags and walked into the street, eyes locked on the girl. Lucas shouted after her, but she didn’t care. She just walked, oblivious to everything around her.
Maya’s body was thrown against a light pole. Pain flooded her senses, but her mind felt distant. She lay on the ground, bleeding, unable to move. Lucas’s voice reached her, desperate and panicked, as he held her in his arms.

Her vision blurred, but she could hear Lucas’s voice, frantic and desperate, as he rushed to her side.
His hands trembled as he cradled her head, tears streaming down his face.
All she could do was stare at the sky, her life slipping away.
And then, it all came back.
